Ok, do not know much about Bochum in particular. Perhaps some locals canchime in on this one. In the meantime here is a start: maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&u... hostelworld.com/Hostels/Boch... europeanexplorer.com/germany...

This is the link to the hostel in Bochum: http://www.djh-wl.de/jh/bochum/ I didn't see an English version, but if you mail them, they'll reply in English. The main hostel page has an English version, http://www.jugendherberge.de/en/ I haven't stayed in this hostel, but the djh hostels are generally quite good. If you want to stay there with a large group, book early. The hostels are favourites for class trips.

Just in case you didn't find any in Bochum, you can also search in Essen, Gelsenkirchen or Dortmund. They are all very much tight together around Bochum and will take you around 15 minutes to get from one city to another.
