We will be visiting Germany in mid-September 2010 for 2.5 weeks. One week in the Black Forest, one week in Southern Bavaria, and 3-4 days in Munich. We are a couple with two young children - one will be about 4 yrs old, and one will be about 1 year old. We are looking for some advice for the best home base for our time in the Black Forest. We are looking for a base that is central enough that it will allow us to do several day trips to the usual places (forest walks, cable cars to mountain views, cuckoo clock shopping, historic sites, open air museums, etc) but also have plenty to do on the days when we stick closer to home. Somewhere with easy-ish access to groceries, pharmacy, bakeries, and family friendly restaurants is also a plus. We are flying into Frankfurt, and are hiring a car. We would like to be in the Southern Black Forest, which would give us options to visit Lake Constance as well (a place Does anyone have any suggestions for us? Also, if anyone has suggestions for Bavaria, we are looking for advice on that area as well. Thanks so much in advance!
I would opt for Donaueschingen (the Danube source) and surrounding region. Try Google or VT Forum Messages and Travel Pages for suggestions, there is something for every taste and budget. Enjoy, Richard

We liked to stay near Löffingen and Baisersbronn, both in the southern part of the Black Forest. It's been a while - our children are grown up now - , so I don't know if the apartments we had rented are still available. Check out this page, it's very helpful: blackforest-tourism.com/urla... We also took day trips to Lake Constance. Traffic can be bad, though.

Baiersbronn is a good idea. Near to the Autobahn direction Freiburg or Basel etc is the small town Gengenbach, which is very pretty too, and the mountains are not so very high there, so that small children can have a walk too.
