      food and meals

by piosku67 Online Now Feb 8, 2013 at 12:21 PM

I have a problem with food while in Spain (and France, too). Tapas are excellent for diabetic, who have to eat small amounts of food but many times a day, but not for me. From my point of view, sorry if I offend someone, but the people tend to drink just coffee in a hurry in the morning, eat little if any during the day and they dine late at night. Sometimes, I can observe that eating out - not sitting in a café and sipping a drink or coffee - during the day can be treated as an odd thing. But I’m quite opposite. I eat quite big breakfast, eat the main meal during the day 3 – 5 p.m. and enjoy something light in the evening. I hope that Bilbao could be culturally different (or I may be wrong) and it’ s much colder so people have different habits of eating out. However, the climate can be misleading in this matter, because I could observe that continental breakfast, light lunch (sometimes sandwiches or salad) eating out at 12 or 1 p.m. characterize Scandinavian nations as well, which puzzled me much. I could die of hunger living there and working hard without hot, big dinner eaten during the day. Of course I am forced to go by without it here in my country till 5 p.m. (at 6 I am able to kill someone because of anger and hunger). Another things are the names of dishes. Can you recommend something nourishing for lunch. Going to restaurant in Spain and not knowing Spanish can be very risky.

by genetm Online Now Jun 20, 2012 at 6:57 AM

How long does it take to get through customs if you're coming from CDG and arriving in around noon on a Saturday? How long do you have to stand in line to get a taxi? Will my 17 year old daughter have any troubles taking a taxi from the airport to the Guggenheim Museum? About how much should it cost? I'm already nervous for her and she hasn't even left the States yet. Thanks for any input given.

Friends, I am looking for a best economical hostel or hotel to spend a night close to Airport or Central bus station. Last time I was in Sevilla, and it was the best time staying in the Samay hostel (the feet up hostel group) and very very cheap with good facilities. Unfortunately feet-up is not there in Bilbao. Do you have any other hostel or hotel in mind? Thanks, Mac

by gavsey Online Now May 5, 2011 at 10:34 AM

Need to get a group (15) from Madrid to Bilbao for an early morning flight. Renting a bus is too costly. From what I've seen so far, it seems like the train does not go to the airport, so how do we get from the Bilbao-Abando station to the airport? And does such transport run late at night when we'll likely be arriving from Madrid? How much does this station-airport transport cost? Any help appreciated!

I am planning to arrive in Bilbao on Saturday evening, 10 July and leave on the morning of the 12th. I will go to San Sebastian on Monday. What is there to do in Bilbao on a Sunday? I've been to the museum before and probably will not go there. I assume stores will be closed. I won't have a car and don't want to ventue too far from the city.

      Bilbao Consulate

by cemeterybird Online Now Apr 21, 2010 at 1:44 PM

I shall be driving a van across Spain with my sisters belongings and a newphew in tow who has been stranded in Spain for quite a while with no passport (it fell out of date a couple of years ago, then his mother lost it in various moves). Long story but this mug has volunteered for this rescue mission and of course, I have to sort out my nephew with an emergency travel document, in able to get him back to the UK. I have a choice of going to the Madrid or Bilbao consulate but thought, as we needed to get a ferry at Bilbao or Santander, that Bilbao would be the more convenient choice (I've had reports that Madrid is a nightmare to drive through). Only problem is that it states on the Foreign Office website that Bilbao is only open to people with appointments and I have had no luck getting through to them (volcanic ash strandees overwhelming them I would imagine). Has anyone had experience with the Bilbao consulate? Any help or advice gratefully received.
