will be coming in May 2012 with my 23 yr old daughter and I need info on a couple of places to stay, a cabin, cottage would like small place with frig and microwave, coffee maker of course we are on a budget. We plan to be in this area for 4 days and then head to Yosemite. Any suggestions most welcomed. Thanks
Myra, I envy you and your upcoming trip. Carmel, Big Sur, and Santa Barbara are some of my favorite places to visit. I have a few pages on both Carmel and Santa Barbara, which you may wish to look at. These pages may give you some insight into the area. Have a great trip. Most of the cabins and cottages along the central coast including Santa Barbara require minimum stays of two to three days. Here is one place my friend who lives in nearby Goleta suggested you might want to consider that is modestly priced and has good reviews that is a rental in Santa Barbara. A budget hotel would likely be about the same price but a much smaller room. tripadvisor.com/VacationRent...

It may be easier and less expensive to stay in the nearby city of Carpenteria. There is a state beach in this city, so that is nice and Santa Barbara is not too far away. I really think that you can do Santa Barbara in two days and then move up the coast to see Solvang, San Louis Obispo, Cambria, San Simeon, Morrow Bay, Monterey, Santa Cruz. (Not sure if you have time for all those or if you're going to go the inner route on I-5). I would suggest picking up those coupon books at Shell/McDonalds, they are usually a good option for road trips if you are on a budget. Here is their website too: http://www.travelcouponguide.com/ I'm biased towards Yosemite and would spend more time there! Good luck planning your trip.
