I was sent a cutting about this natural disaster by the American relatives who drove me down the route this time last year. Looking at my map you should still be able to make the trip using Highways 101, 68 or 46.Good Luck!

If you are driving south on Hwy 1 from Monterey, then yes you can get to Garrapata State Beach. It will be very busy due to the earth slippage further south on Hwy I. This State Beach is about 20 miles north of Big Sur and the road closure is closer to Big Sur. It looks like this can be a disaster for the Big Sur Parks as the road may not be repaired for summer. This is the alert for Hwy 1: "IS CLOSED FROM 13.7 MI NORTH OF BIG SUR STATE PARK /AT ROCKY CREEK/
(MONTEREY CO) - DUE TO A SLIP-OUT - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN
    ALTERNATE ROUTE"

For other ideas of what to do in the area, check a map for the central costal towns from Carmel-By-The-Sea north to Half Moon Bay. Then look at the various towns in the Virtual Tourist Travel Guides for the tips. If you see what you like then plan a day trip for any of these towns. Lots to do and see just in the Monterey Bay area from Carmel Valley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pacific Grove, Monterey and even Moss Landing. Cambria would be a very long day trip. ;-)

As travelgourmet said you can make it to Garrapata, if that is all you want to do. If you wqnt to go further, it will depend on the time you plan to travel. At first the report was that it would take a month to reopen. Not going to happen. However things may be looking up a bit, as they now say that it will be closed though April. Too much money is being lost by the Big Sur businesses, as far south as Cambria, so I expect this road repair to be on a fast track. Here is what the very last report said, dated today.

"Both Directions of Hwy 1 Remain Closed in Monterey County (4/3/11 11:56 a.m.)
A long term road closure is still in effect for both directions of Hwy 1 along the coast, between the Bixby Creek Bridge and Palo Colorado Road, just south of Carmel. However, pedestrians will be escorted through a half-mile section from one end of the slide to the other at TWO different times: 7 AM AND 4 PM PROMPTLY, beginning March 30. Bikes are also okay during these escorts. People should park their vehicles at the Bixby Creek/Old Coast Road turnout at the south end, and the Rocky Creek Bridge turnout at the north end. A 2-mile section of severely damaged roadway has been fenced off remains closed through April for temporary repair work. Motorists are advised to use Highways 101, 68 and 46 as alternate routes traveling between Carmel and Big Sur. Please check back for updates as more information becomes available.

HJere is a look at the original news item, and the updated report as well. Keep an eye on the last link for updates.
