Top 10 quirky must do's?

by frogue Online Now Apr 17, 2012 at 11:29 AM

I will be in Berlin for 6 days at the end of April and beginning of May. I am always looking for something unique to do. Nothing crazy, just the stuff you don't find in guide books. Things like: make sure you order "this food" from "this place", or make sure you go to "this nondescript" building and "stand here" to "see this"..... haha.. just something that locals or regulars know, but not marketable enough to put into a guide book...
Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks =)

You will love my set of tips on Berlin here Basically I just wandered, starting from the Mockenbruck U-bahn station, wherever took my fancy and a lot of the stuff I came across I had to research when I got home to find what they were all about. There's also some interesting bars (well, actually quite a few bars in general ; - HIC!)

    Go to the Currywurst Museum.

Eat a Currywurst (invented in Berlin).

Have a look at the Blue Mauritius at the Museum of Communication.

Check out the "Houseball" nearby at Bethlehemskirchplatz.

Go to Treptower Park (you will find this in travel guides but barely see tourists there).

    Be part of Eastside Gallery.

Chat with the teddy bears at Nikolaiviertel and have a look at THE bear. No Berlin visit without bears as the name Berlin derives from Bärlin, meaning small bear.

Climb Kreuzberg, the city's highest "peak" (66 metres...).

See Berlin as a sculpture in Tauentzienstraße.

Fly the world's biggest helium balloon.

    Take a Trabbi tour.

Find as many Buddy Bears as possible.

Check out the manhole covers in Berlin.

Go for a swim on the riverboats and take a sunbath at a "Strandbar".

Hop along and across the Wall markings.

And - as already suggested, but you cannot suggest it often enough - drink a Berliner Weiße mit Schuss. Or several ones of them.

I have a couple of mandatory rituals/places to see whenever I go to Berlin. If you enjoy murder mysteries and can understand the language, the wonderful Berliner Kriminal Theater is a must. And, in my opinion, the best place for Currywurst is the Imbiss am Zoo, next to the Palast am Zoo movie theatres. And I always take a weekly German course at PROLOG to improve my language skills - it's very affordable and definitely off the beaten path!
