I'll be in Berlin from October 18-23 with a friend. We'd like to stay in a central location from which we can walk to major attractions or take a short subway ride. Any recommendations for specific hotels or neighborhoods to consider would be greatly appreciated. Also, my friend and I both enjoy fine dining so please recommend some restaurants we should try as well as nice places to try in all price ranges. Thanks
Hi there! We especially enjoyed our meal at the Altes Europa in Scheuenviertal - you can read my review here: Altes Europa: "Scheunenviertal delight" - Berlin Restaurant Tip by toonsarah

The area around the zoo is very nice - some good hotels and lots of restaurants plus easy walking to the Ku'Dam shops and cafes. For good restaurant tips, go to www.chowhound.com. The people in the forums there are very friendly and have wonderful ideas on where to eat. There is a train and subway stop just there.

Hi Vicky, welcome to VT. I was in Berlin in early October 2010 and the weather was perfect. I stayed in the Mitte area at the Hilton across from the Gremeldemarkt (sp?). There was a metro stop just in front of the Hotel, but it was a very nice 15 minute walk to the Museum Island. I have several great restos on my Berlin page. My favorite was Refugium. But don't forget to have a sausage with onions on a hard role at any one of the street vendors. Karl

It is always a good idea to stay in either Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg. You do not say if you want a hotel, hostel or an apartment, but against the background that you like good dining, I freely assume we can skip hostels. One reliably good Hotel is called Circus (which has a sibling that is a hostel, as well as a new apartment building). It is situated in Mitte, bordering Prenzlauer Berg. http://www.circus-berlin.de/ If you are willing to spend more on your accomodation, consider the Hilton Roadquill mentioned (it is called Gendarmenmarkt, my friend ;-) ) or the Melia near Friedrichstraße station. My personal favourite among higher priced hotels is pretty small and called Blue Home: http://www.ackselhaus.de/blue-home/ If you prefer apartments: http://www.schoenhouse.de/ http://www.kaethe-berlin.de/ (German only, but I guess they can read English) Restaurants - good but affordable: Nola's am Weinberg http://www.nola.de/ (not far from Circus Hotel) Swiss cuisine, come at noon, otherwise prices will be a bit steep for hat you'll get Guggelhof http://www.gugelhof.de/ (not far from the Blue Home) Alsacian/German/French Restaurants - more exclusive Remake http://www.restaurantremake.de/ Austrian, International You can still come wearing jeans here. Brechts http://www.brechts.de/ Austrian, International Similar to Remake, but less adventurous Fischers Fritz in the Regent hotel http://www.fischersfritzberlin.com/ Posh!

Turtleshell, Thank you for your detailed response. And yes, no hostels for us:-). We're open to either apartments or hotels. Funny you mention both Melia and the Hilton as did Karl. I have both on the short list. I will look up all the restaurants you recommended.
