Wher should we stay in Berlin?

by Turska Online Now Sep 30, 2008 at 9:33 AM

It´s me again..I think I just got my husband interested in Berlin also-we love museums, and I told how much museums there is in Berlin-enough to choose from! So,because I love planning,I started allready to check Berlin tips. Can someone recommend witch area we should be looking for flats(or if there isn´t flats for rent, then hotells). We like to stay at area, where we can find different kinds of restaurants in the late evening/night.If you can sit outside it would be best(we are going in summer next year-I´m early-bird..).We usually go eat around 21 0´clock,so not daytime-places only.Could be some romantic, some little cheaper and so on.It wouldn´t harm,if there would be pubs also(no need for nightclubs-it´s not our thing). We also like to live close to center, because we walk a lot,and don´t use trams and so on so much-I know:in Berlin we must do it a little, but if there´s lots of interesting museums and sites at area,it´s even better. Is there big difference in east and west?My parents has visited both, but it was when the wall was still there. If I ask to hard, then take only that thing:restaurants for night? At daytime we can walk 20-30km per day,but after we go fresh up at flat for evening,we will not like to walk long anymore-before morning!

Hi, I stayed in private apartments in Berlin quite a few times. The agency we rented through was Berlin Domizile. You can find their website here: www.berlindomizile.de/en/index.html As for good neighbourhoods for outdoor eating you can try Prenzlauer Berg (around Kollwitzplatz), Mitte (near Oranienburgerstraße/Friedrichstraße or near Hackescher Markt), Charlottenburg (near Savignyplatz), Kreuzberg (my favourite area is around Lausitzer Platz, it's a bit scruffy though) or Friedrichshain (near Simon-Dach-Straße). There are many more places with pubs and restaurants, I just collected the most obvious I thought of. If you don't like taking public transport you should stay in Mitte to have a lot of museums and other sights within walking distance. Everywhere else is easily accessible by subway. Berlin's subway system is excellent so you should consider using it. If not you will also miss the lovely Berlin subway smell ;) You will find it hard to recognise if you are in the east or in the west if you stay in the centre of town. So no, there isn't a big difference anymore. Mitte is in the former east where most of the people seem to stay these days. Hope this helps. Enjoy the planning! Sabs

Thanks a lot, surely this helped!I allready took a quick look of those pages, and saved it at favourites to check more later. Funny thing, that I had allready visited your travel pages coupple of weeks ago!I remembered you, because you had some of our favourite nightlife-restaurants at your Helsinki-page.Loose is a must for us when visiting the capital, and you had even seen 69eyes in Nosturi-maybe we have been in same gig..We are big fans. But thanks for Berlin-tips,I´ll start to check little by little.I have so much else to do,but I must have allways a planning going on.First we are going to Bremen in November, but that´s only for three months,in Berlin we plan to stay a week or two.

about the subways-we don´t have anything against them,we just love walking around.Othervice we might end up seeing only those museums. We never"go shopping"for example, but when we walk around,we might pop in many places on the way,if they look interesting. And if we walk a lot,we can pop in to a pub or cafe, and feel that we´ve desrved it ;) If we have used the subway,it´s mostly night-time,but usually the latest ones are so early, that if you find a good place to sit and listen to music or watch people, you need to check up the time all the time. And about east and west-I thought it is so-it´s been a while allready without the wall.(By the way-we just got a 1000kg piece of wall to Tampere,a gift to our mayor from someone there-can´t remember who was it). There has been lot of writings about it in newspapers, because some say he shouldn´t have taken it,and some say it should be shown in museum(at this time it is,but some want it out..)I don´t understand why it couldn´t be shown-it´s a part of history!

I would also suggest staying in northern Mitte somewhere around Hackescher Markt/Oranienburger Straße. Lots of restaurants there which are open in the evening (though most restaurants in Berlin are open till 11 o'clock in the evening) and it is in a walking distance to many many important sites (which are located mainly in southern Mitte).

Thank you also for that! When we are on holliday,we seem to have mediterrian lifestyle.Wake up early, see the sights for many hours,go to rest fo a while(but later than real siesta),then change something nicer on,and eat late-we might even go to eat after 22 o´clock sometimes. But we also like to sit at pubs of beergardens before going to sleep(usually quite late)-I don´t mean getting drunk-I mean having coupple of beer.If there is a beergardenat good weather),that´s the best choise. Also good music is great, but people have so different tastes of music,so it must be checked out when we are there.

many people in berlin tend to going out for dinner relatively late (9-10 o'clock) so it won't be a problem. Around Oranienburger/Hackescher there are many people sitting outside the restaurants, if you want a real beer garden then I'd suggest to go to Pfefferberg at Senefelder Platz which isn't that far away either (about 15 minutes walk from Oranienburger straße). Additionally there are lots of music clubs (nearly all styles) and bars, so you really have anything over there.

O.k.thanks again.I´m not even sure what people mean by "rea beergardens",we don´t have different namesin Finland for differnet kinds of "terraces"as we call them.Maybe you mean realy big ones. Most important is,that you ca sit outside. And we also like tasting different kinds of beers. And our music-taste is little heavier. At least rock, nothing disco or like that. But I´m sure we´ll find it there. And if we stay longer,we will visit different places diffenert nights,so this sounds good area. Usually, when we are somewher,it rains a lot there,so it´s good also have places to sit inside...(witch allmost all restaurants have of course).´ I´ save your tips!
