Marzahn

by diocletianvs Online Now Jul 27, 2005 at 1:20 PM

Hello, I am visiting Berlin in the last week of August, and as usually I am planning to visit some of the large housing estates, especially in the former East Berlin. Right now on my list are Karl Marx Allee, Marzahn, Pankow and Ernst-Thalmann Park in Prenzlauer Berg. (I know the latter two are not large housing estates, but I want to get an idea of different housing areas.) I would really like to visit Marzahn, but all guidebooks say it has a reputation for violence and that one should avoid the area or try not to look too much like a tourist. (How am I supposed to take my 500 photos???). So my question is: is it really that bad that I shouldn't go there? (Btw, I'm planning to go there early in the morning - will that help? I know being alone won't help - but that will probably be the case unless I manage to force someone to join me :) And if you know of some other similar areas that you do recommend visiting please suggest.... Thank you.

Although I'm absolutely not sure why you want to go there (it is really...well...don't want to offend people living there...but, it's really very ugly), you can of course visit Marzahn without getting killed (good luck...no, just kidding!!)!!! Please make sure you leave before evening/night and don't talk to gangs and strange looking people. Really interesting and much much nicer mulit-cultural places with the charme of old "East Berlin" are Prenzlauer Berg (also called Prenzlberg)and Kreuzberg. These areas are really worth visiting! Take care and have a nice trip! Dinah

Hey xxDinahxx:"""Really interesting and much much nicer mulit-cultural places with the charme of old "East Berlin" are Prenzlauer Berg (also called Prenzlberg)and Kreuzberg."""Kreuzberg is West Berlin! Hey diacletianvs: berlin as any city or town can be dangerous! You can be killed by drug-dealers or violent gangs anywhere... You seem to look for special kind of mass-architecture for modern housing. "Maerkisches Viertel" in the North of West Berlin could be interesting.

Yes, I am looking especially for large housing estates of the 1960s and 70s. That's why I'm planning to visit Marzahn. Of course I'll try to visit more "charming" places as well - like Prenzlauer Berg for example. I am aware that when travelling (or simply walking in your own city) you are never 100% safe. If Marzahn is really not that dangerous (as some guidebooks suggest) then I'll take my chances..... Thanks for the suggestion Anselmo, I'll try to find more info about Maerkisches Viertel and possibly visit it as well.

there are more housing estates built in that time in West Berlin: Gropius-Stadt (Underground-station Lipschitzallee) and the circle around Mehringplatz (Underground-station Hallesches Tor)

marzahn really isn't that bad anymore... plus the people that live there nowadays aren't even German, they are russians and vietnamese. there is a big vietnamese market there and a shopping mall. it's not full of thrilling social opportunities, but it's ok. there's also a huge chinese garden.
