The Downtown Berkeley BART station is on Shattuck, about 3 blocks from University Avenue. But University Avenue is a long street, so it depends upon where on the avenue you're going. Pull up BART's website: www.bart.gov . You can look at maps of the area surrounding each BART station.

Go to any BART station along Market Street going toward the east bay. Berkeley is on the Richmond Line going north. Trains are pretty much every twenty minutes or so on the weekends and more on the weekdays, but checking a schedule is a good idea. Get off at University and walk up toward the hills. You'll run right into the U of Berkeley.
