Hi, my mum and her friend fly into Bergamo on the 24th September and will be travelling to Bellagio via the local train. I have found out that they will have to catch the bus connecting the airport to the train station, train to Varenna and then the ferry to Bellagio. They are a bit concerned about the ease of buying the tickets to complete their journey. They will not clear airport customs until 1830ish, will the train station be manned or will they have to buy their tickets from a machine? If so where are the machines located? Is purchasing the bus tickets a simple procedure?
Thanks in Advance Si.
Just seeing it in black and whit will allay any fears they have.
It will be very easy for your mum and her friend to buy their tickets. they should make sure they have some euro coins (perhaps buy something in Arrivals before they seek out the bus stop?).
The bus ticket is no problem .They can use the machine at the bus stop outside Arrivals or I'm pretty sure they can pay the driver. The machine has English language options.
The train tickets are equally easy. Almost all Italian railway ticket machines have English language options and Bergamo certainly does. The machines will usually give change, but it is easy enough (if the machines have run out) to buy sweets or something from the newsagent inside the station (about 6ft away from the ticket machines).
They do *not* have to buy tickets in advance online. These trains *cannot* get full up and are very unlikely to be busy at that time of day.
Here's the official Italian railway timetable in English for times, details and fares;
It's better to use the machines than ticket offices because the latter often have long queues. I am pretty sure that Bergamo ticket office does not close until later anyway.
Remind them that they *must* validate (date-stamp) their tickets before they board, using the yellow machines on the platform. There are on-the-spot fines for non-validation and guards do check.
There are electronic displays in the station entrance and at the platforms so they will know which platform they need for their train.
I suspect they will catch the 1914 (arr Varenna 2023). They will have to change at Lecco, but this is very easy. Again, there are electronic displays to assist and they can always as an employee ('Per favore, ...Varenna binario?? ' with a smile will do the trick!) Binario (sometimes 'bin' on displays) = platform.
Once at Varenna they will have to walk downhill for about 10 minutes to reach the ferry dock....it's an easy walk and there's little possibility of getting lost. They should follow the road down towards the water and then turn left when they reach the t-junction with the lake directly in front of them, continually moving down towards the water.
There are a few photos on my Varenna page which may help them to get oriented, if they've not been before.
There is a ticket office at the dock where they will be able to buy their tickets. If it is closed I am certain they will be able to buy them as they board.
Tell them not to worry. Both Bergamo airport, Bergamo itself and the towns around Lake Como are well-used to visitors.
