Most shops in Italy close between 6 and 7, sometimes later on some days of the week. Some open at 8 (newsagents, some food shops), some at 9, some not until 10 or even 11. Shop opening times seem to vary from shop to shop (and from day to day in some cases). Some shops close for a few hours in the afternoon. I do not think 'early closing day' is a norm in Italy because of this practice and I have never noticed early closing anywhere when I have visited (which does not mean it does not exist, of course).

In Bergamo and the region of Lombardy most shops are closed on Sundays and on Monday mornings, but there is no early-closing day. Supermarkets and grocery shops mostly close at 20.00. Other shops can close at 19.00, 19.30 or 20.00. Many shops, but not all, and especially not the department stores, close between 12.30 and 15.30.

like Manara said in Lombardia they have late openig day on Monday, other part of Italy is diferent, ie Emilia-Romagna the shops do not open on thursday afternoon. big supermarket and shopping center (and allo shops in it) usually are closed on Monday morning and they are opened all day other days, sometime also Sunday, usually December for sure, someelse also November and October plus some sundays during the year. In Tuscany many Esselunga are opened 7 days a week all year.
