Hello, i'm planning a trip to Sri-Lanka and got some problems trying to find the bus stop and the schedule for direct buses from Kandy to Trinkomalee. There's a lot of information on different sites that the direct bus between these points exists but no one named the bus station and the number of the bus. If anyone knows the exact information, please, answer.

Sharing a private driver? Sri Lanka round trip 13/7 'till 31/7

Sri Lanka May 10, 2015 at 6:22 AM

We - 2 Belgian students, both 21 years old - are planning to hire a private driver in Sri Lanka from, we want to see and do a lot and we're afraid it will be too much time lost to figure out the best route with public transport. We're planning to go off the beaten tracks (we're going motorbiking in the north for example), without skipping the must see highlights. We'll have 2 available seats in the car. These are the transfers from our itinerary (a raw draft at least):

      - 13th of July: transfer from Colombo airport to Anuradhapura (2 nights)

      - 15th of July: Transfer Anuradhapura to Jaffna (2 nights). Stopping on the way: Mihintalee, and maybe something else.

      - 17th of July: transfer Jaffna to area of Trincomalee/Uppuvelli (2 nights)

      - 19th of July: transfer Trincomalee/Uppuvelli to Kandy (2 nights). Stopping on the way at: Ritigala Ruins & Sigiriya.

      - 21st of July: transfer Kandy to Adams Peak (1 night)

      - 22nd of July: transfer Adams Peak to area of Horton Plains (1 night)

      - 23rd of July: We'll be taking the train to Ella after hiking around in Horton Plains. Stay in Ella for 2 days/ 3 nights.

      - 26th of July: transfer Ella - Arugam Bay (1 night)

      - 27th: transfer Arugam Bay - Yala/Yala East (not sure yet...) for 1 safari - Tangalle (2 nights)

      - 29th: transfer Tangalle to Galle (1 night)

      - 30th: transfer to Colombo (1 night)

      - 31st: Airport transfer in the evening (our flight leaves around 8 pm)

I already contacted some private drivers (not everyone answered already) and it seems that the transfers will be around 800 - 900 USD (+/- 2400 km), the accomodation of the driver is not included. So if we could find 2 other people: it would be 200 - 250 USD/person, depending on the chosen accomodations (if they offer free driver accomodation or not; if not included: they charge around 1500 rupees/night, which means 10 euro, which we still have to divide by 4 people, so that's really cheap!). I'm still awaiting the response and rate of other private drivers and tour operators.

We're looking for 2 other people who'd like to join us on the transfers and share the private driver. We're aware that most people will not follow the same route, and maybe just want to share a part of the route: you guys are also very welcome! We're always open to change the itinerary a little bit; in order to make it a perfect fit.

Little bit about us: we're super fun and easygoing! Haha.

Just leave me a message, or a reply, and I'll come back to you asap.

      Thanks guys!

      Daytrip to Bentota?

by Bladewings Online Now Dec 14, 2014 at 6:42 PM

Hi Guys, I'm Samantha and may be travelling to Sri Lanka in January (2015), with my son. Is mid January a good time for a swim at the beach at Bentota? i'm assuming it's quite a safe beach. My son is autistic and loves water. We will likely stay in Dehiwala. A quick search told me I can get an express train early morning to Bentota and also return via train the same day in the late afternoon.

Sri Lanka tour, self touring or through traveling agency?

by sadeem Online Now Jan 5, 2014 at 11:55 AM

I'm visiting Sri Lanka in mid January and have planned everything myself, the only thing left is transportation, I'm planning on hiring a driver.

It will be my first experience in an east Asian country, and I know especially in Sri Lanka that moving from one place to another and finding suitable accommodation can be difficult. Therefore, I am wondering if planning the tour through a traveling agency would be better than planning it myself.

Here is my plan, I would appreciate an comments or advise on it:

      Arrival: 16 Jan 10 AM

      Kandy 2 nights: 16 Jan - 18 Jan

Hotel: Hunas Falls by Amaya. Checkout: 12 PM

Activities and Places to visit: Elephant orphanage, Royal botanical garden.

      Nuwara Eliya 3 nights: 18 Jan - 21 Jan

Hotel: Brockenhurst villa. Checkout: 1 PM.

Activities and Places to visit: Pedro state tea factory, Horton plains national park, Adam's peak, Gem mines, Gregory lake.

      Mirissa 2 nights: 21 Jan - 23 Jan

Hotel: Villa Vatura @ Talaramba Reef. Checkout: 1 PM.
Activities and Places to visit: Beach, whale watching, Safari Yala national park, Deep sea fishing, hot air ballooning.

Bentota 2 nights: 23 Jan - 25 Jan. Hotel prices are inflated we couldn't find a suitable place.

      Departure 26 Jan.

I have contacted some traveling agencies and they have proposed some itineraries. I found their prices quite expensive, since I am traveling with a group of 7 the total amount would reach $8000, excluding entrance fees and lunch and dinner . Based on my calculation, my plan would cost me much less.

      Any advice?

      Thank you

I am in no intention to bring in controversy to this forum....however I (my Wife) have this feeling of insecurity about the public travel i.e. busses/Auto Rickshaws etc as we are "Tamil speaking people". We are definitely in no intention of ticking anyone is the temperature there in Colombo and Bentota about the above mentioned concern???? you could drop in an email as your response if you feel that this forum may not be appropriate...

My Blind Date with Sri Lanka

by sriramlovesmusic Online Now Sep 7, 2010 at 7:58 PM

I love to travel. And I travel impulsively. I wanted to visit Sri Lanka ever since childhood and now after 27 years I have the opportunity. I have 3 nights and 4 days to spend in the country. My research has lead me to 2 cities Bentota and Colombo. I do understand that there is a forum separately for Bentota however I was thinking a one-stop solution would definitely help. My budget (excluding air fare) is roughly 25000 LKR. I am not a fussy traveler. here are my following questions that will help my quest.
      1. From the International airport there is a bus that takes me to a bus stand. Do I have priate/state transport busses that take me to Bentota and a rough cost in LKR?
      2. I have a flight that lands at 02:30 Local time and post immigration etc I may be free by 04:0 AM. Is it ideal for me to go to bentota at that time and will there be public transportation available?
      3. Will I be able get budget accommodations in Bentota within a price range of 2000 LKR (twin sharing). Please note that I am travelling with my wife (good looking) and I want no trouble where I stay.
      4. I am planning 2 days in bentota and 1 day in Colombo. Is that an ideal cost effective plan or coming to Colombo on the 2nd day and staying there makes better sense. Wife likes to shop and we both club too. (28th October - Thursday to 1st November Saturday morning)
      5. Which is the central part of Colombo where I could stay and have easy access to shopping/pubs/clubs?
      6. Over and above all of this, is 25000 LKR sufficient to conquer my quest?
I love the country and I need your advise...HELP PLEASE

    • Homestay in Bentota Area

by noelOH Online Now Jan 7, 2010 at 6:23 AM

I am planning to travel to Sri Lanka in March this year, when I will be attending my daughters wedding which will take place at the 'Taj Exotica Bentota Beach' hotel.
I visited Sri Lanka 9 years ago with my wife for a short holiday but this time I will be travelling alone and would very much like to learn more about Sri Lankan cultures and customs.
I feel that 'Homestay' may be a good way of doing this.
My intentions are to come over in mid to late February and stay for about one month during which time I would be also interested in getting involved in voluntary work.
Can anyone please give me any assistance or recommend who I should contact in order to arrange this?
I would welcome any advice you may have.
      Thank you
