Hi VT! Heading up to this area for the first time and plan to stay outdoors as much as possible! I have heard there are some amazing trails but we're trying to narrow it down. Any recommendations on some of the best hikes within the Bend area? Home base will be right on the Deschutes, and we will have a car. We plan to make time to explore South Sister, but other than that....not sure what other hikes to include. Would love to hear some of your favorites! Also, any favorite restaurants for some post-hiking brew and grub? And after we clean up, any recommendations on a fine dining establishment with ambience and outstanding menu? Reading through all the reviews, but it's hard to decide! Thanks for your help, G_G
This is really a hard thing to describe as there are quite a number of places you could go. There a number of different books about the central cascades, and my best suggestion would be to purchase one of those locally. This is especially the case as these will give you detailed driving instructions. Most of the driving will be on forest service roads and logging roads, and require detailed instructions on how to get to the location once you turn off the pavement. Bend isn't a huge community, though a huge number of people have moved there over the past several years. So, don't expect there to be a huge variety of places in terms of restaurants and bars. I think you should definitely try the McMenamin's Old Saint Francis School, however.

I think that's a great idea to pick up one of the local guides for specific driving directions to the local hikes. I'd hate to have to spend most of the time weaving our way back on track to find the trailheads, and less time hiking the trails! Great advice Glenn, and thanks for the tip on McMenamins! Of the various places that have a decent selection, Powell's Books in Portland usually has a reasonably good number of such things. There are a couple of others that specialize in outdoor activities where the selection is better, but they don't ship to you by mail.
