Car/4x4 rental in Belize

Hi all, I'm planning a trip to Guatemala/Belize in June this year. After a week down in Rio I'm heading to Guatemala City, heading north and entering Belize from Tikal to San Ignacio. I plan to get buses as much as possible but I was wondering if anyone had experience of car rental in Belize as I prefer not to do organised tours and like to do things myself. So was thinking about getting a 4x4 for Belize especialy given the shorter travelling distances compared to Guatemala. Are roads difficult etc? How much realistically would I be paying for say, 3 days 4x4 rental? Thanks David
