I will land in BJ early afternoon (from USA), but I do not want to pre-purchase a ticket (in case of miss it due to traffic etc.). Can I buy a ticket at the Beijing South train station for the immediate next departure train to Shanghai (I am an American)?
Or do I really have to pre-purchase online? Any suggestion on which website to buy (ctrip.com???). If I miss the train I have the ticket for, would it be too much trouble having to have the ticket (for the missed train) refund first, then but another one?
I am leaving tomorrow, any quick advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks!
I have read there are several high speed trains running between Beijing and Shanghai each day.
Two questions please.
First.....could i expect to arrive at the railway station in Beijing and simply buy a reserved first class ticket for travel to Shanghai on the "next" train?
Second......can I go to the railway station in Beijing and purchase a reserved first class ticket for travel to Shanghai on the NEXT day etc?

The cost is around 600 rmb for the day.
Dear VTers, I recently recommended Alvin of Beijing to be the tour guide of my best friend who will be traveling to Beijing with ther family some time December. Unfortunately, due to the terror attack in Tiananmen last October, Alvin was critically hurt and cannot assist my friend. I am asking my fellow VTers for 2 things:
1. For those who believe in prayers, pls pray for Alvin's speedy recovery. He broke ribs and pelvis. He cannot breathe well and is currently confined at Beijing Orthopedic Hospital. Will not post pictures here so as not to offend others who may find his hurt pictures a bit delicate to look at.
2. Need your recommendation for another reliable tour guide who can provide van+driver only. My friend does not need tour packages at this point, just a van+driver. Please help. Please send contact details, too.
Thanks in advance.
For university I am allowed to go on a short trip to Beijing from the 6th to the 14th of December. Are there any interesting educational experiences I could have? I am open to anything realy.
There is one limit though. I am only allowed to go in order to visit a one-time opportunity. For example a museum is not allowed, but a speech is.
It could be about anything. IT would be preferable, but social issues or science would be great too.
Does anybody know whether there is an upcoming event I should visit? I would greatly appreciate your help!
Which banks have ATM's in PKK - I only see listings for Hua Hin - Was looking for Aeon if there is one?

Hi everyone! I'm planning to go to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. I would like to see a lot of autumm/fall foliage. When do you think it's a better time to go for this purpose: this weekend (October 26th) or the next one (November 3rd)? By early november would the autumm colors would be already gone?
Thanks a lot in advance for any information/help you could give me... best regards!
We enjoyed a 'smarTours' trip in Nov 2011 with 5 nights Beijing & 3 nights Shanghai. Since it was our first visit to China, we took their guided day tours. We're returning this November on the same itinerary, but want to explore on our own. Is it possible to get off the beaten path away from the city on a day trip? Maybe a train ride to a rural area. Any suggestions? Thx, Woody (Stanwood WA)
When we booked our 21 day tour to China last year for September 2013, the tour was for 4 nights in Beijing, but then they cut out a day in Beijing. down to 2 & 1/2 days. We saw the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tienanmen Square, Beijing Zoo, Hutong home, and Great Wall, as well as Peking Duck. As we drove past, our tour guide pointed out the Altar of Heaven and Astronomy Platform (which had been included as a visit in the previous itinerary) We also missed out on the Summer Palace. I will be back March, 2014 taking advantage of my 1 year multiple entry visa.
I plan to see the Natural History Museum, Altar of Heaven, and the Astronomy Observatory (Day 1); Summer Palace China Museum (Day 2). That will leave an open day. What would be a good new sight or experience?
I would be in Beijing starting 19th Oct. Was looking at getting some genuine outdoor trekking gear like shoes etc.

Hi - looking to visit the Ming Tombs from Beijing as a solo traveller in September.
Online there is mention of a tourist bus number 872 which goes from Desheng Gate Bus station to the tombs - is this correct, and is this the best way to get there?
Also, once I have visited the tombs can I get a bus to visit the Great Wall at either Badaling or Mutianyu.
I know tours are available, but I am not a fan of these.
Thanks for any advice
Hello everyone --- a couple friends and I are traveling to China for the first and probably only time in the foreseeable future.
We were kind of on the fence whether to stay at a Western hotel vs. staying at a hutong. I think the latter may be a more unique experience, but my friend is concerned that a hutong may have mold, beg bugs, or be generally run down.
Any opinions? I was looking at a family room at the Xiao Yuan or the Bamboo Garden Hotel (both in Hutong areas) vs. something like Novotel Peace. Or maybe the Shadow Art Hotel which is kind of an in-between.
Again we're kind of on the fence between hutong and Western hotel --- want to know if some of the more decent hutongs have anything to be worried about potentially or we should play it safe at a more known quantity. Thanks!
