by scott011 Online Now Jun 26, 2012 at 8:26 AM

Hello, We will be making our first trip to China in October. I was looking for advice on a private tour. There are three adults, and we wanted for someone to help make it a stressless day, thanks

I stayed overnight in Simatai and made arrangements there with a driver. The next morning I had the driver take me to jinshanling and I hiked back on the wall to Simatai. You really don't need a guide for the walk back. There are many drivers/guides in the lot at Simatai and should have no problem finding someone. Of course this could be stressfull because it is not pr-arranged. At Jinshanling, as you get up on the wall, you will have locals start to follow you and provide information like a tour guide. At the half way point you may have to pay an entrance fee if you don't bring a ticket from Simatai. Here the guide will leave you but not before trying to sell some souvenirs. A really good time.

I joined a tour arranged by my hostel. (Most places you stay have one.) It took people from hostel to the entrance, with a local people walking along with you til the next exit. There was no rush. The local people just walked with you. He's not a guide. I found that quite relax even for person like me never exercise but only walk/trek once a year during a trip.)

I come from CHINA, but living in Perth at the moment. I am planning a trip to Beijing in October(as my 1st time too) and going to travel around CHINA for a couple of weeks. I think it would be a great idea to make a group people :)

Simatai has been closed in June 2010, almost 2 years to today. The local goverment said it need to be upgraded, that is the official comment. So, you can only hike Great Wall Jinshanling section not Simatai.
