Homestays in Beijing??

by thleats Online Now May 14, 2012 at 7:53 PM

Hey everyone! I'm arriving in Beijing on June 18th to study for two months at a university in the Haidian district. I want to experience as much culture as possible and so I am trying to locate a homestay with a chinese family. I've searched quite a bit over the past couple months, with no concrete results. Does anyone have a suggestion? Maybe a good agency to go through or a site you've had success with? I would gladly teach English for an hour a day in exchange for just a place to sleep and an internet connection. Thanks! Nolan

I would make enquiries at the University you will be attending. they are bound to know of student accommodation. As you only have a month to arrange this I think you had better hurry!

Hey Nolan, just try "www.couchsurfing.org", might not be possible as long as 2 months, but Couchurfer's accomodate travelers at home according to availability ... Good Luck and enjoy ur time in China ... :)

Thanks for all your replies! I've been saving couchsurfing as a last result (like you said because of the length) but I do have a couple threads going on the site concerning homestays. And I just put up a classified ad on the beijinger so we'll see what happens. Crossing me fingers.... I've tried going through the university to find local off campus homestays, but they gave me a flat-out no on that, which I thought was odd. I'll keep searching though cause I've already got the tickets and visa so no backing out now!

Remember that wherever you stay you have to register with the Police. The University should be guiding you on this as there are places you are allowed to stay and places you are not supposed to. It is a risk staying anywhere that is not approved for foreigners. Also be careful about doing anything that can be construed as work if you are not on the correct visa. I am not familiar with student visas and whether you are allowed to do any work. best you become very familiar with what you can and can't do.

The Police you should register with are called the Public Security Bureau or Gong' an Ju. You need to know which particular branch of the PSB covers the area you want to stay in and you will need someone who speaks Chinese to assist you with the registration. When you register in a hotel they take your passport and scan it - this is the hotel registering you online with their local PSB.

I really appreciate the info on registering with the PSB. Since the homestay isn't working out at the moment, I'm considering subletting an apartment for the two months while I've over there. Yet, I'm concerned about the validity of a sublet contract from the viewpoint of the PSB. I looked up the registration process on the following website: examiner.com/article/china-1.... Under step 2, it says that I need to bring the contract for the rental. Does anyone think that I will run into issues with this? Has anyone registered with the PSB while subletting an apartment? Thanks

I would be talking to the University first. Maybe also look on some of the website that teachers in China have as they are likely to be familiar with the in and outs.
