1. Fly; 2. Take the train (8 or 10 hours, as I recall). We took an overnight train from Xi'an to Beijing and it was a good thing the journey went overnight. The scenery was quite boring.

I would take the overnight train if i was you. Chinese trains have raised the standards big time in recent years and are very pleasant to take overnight with good xleeper compartments.

I'd fly, it's quick and easy and fairly inexpensive if you book your air travel once there. The trip takes approximately 2 hours. We've paid as little as CNY 530 or around USD70.00 on China Airlines. You might be able to get even cheaper. Homer

Overnight train trip from Beijing West Station to Xian is a viable option and saves you 1 night hotel accommodation. Try the soft sleeper with 4 beds in 1 cabin. You can view a pic in my travel pages here.

I think the best way is to take the train, leaves at 9:45, and arrives about 8:00 o'clock in the morning, by this way, you can save one night hotel and the soft sleeper is very comfortable!
