My wife and I are arriving in Beijing on Sept 06 at 14:50 to attend the Paralympics. Our daughter is a BB player. We have rented an apt close to the Olympic Green. I have heard conflicting stories about getting a taxi at the airport wo getting scammed. Our landlord has given us the exact location of the apt in Mandarin and English,(I have printed copies). Will this info be sufficient? Any advice/tips appreciated.
Hi The service is largely upgraded already in the pre-olympic period. It's sufficient if you have the full address on hand to the taxi-driver. You should go the taxi quene/stand to take taxi. Any driver asking you to go to your destination is not trustworthy. It would be great if your landlord can arrange pick up by a taxi-driver. If you want, I can help to arrange one for you because I always go to Beijing for business and leisure. Cheers Joyce

The location that has been supplied by your landlord should be fine to give to the taxi driver, but make sure you get a taxi from the official rank. Do not be tempted by anyone inside the arrivals lounge offering to get you a taxi as they will not be official and will be much more expensive.

For a faster (and most probably cheaper) ride, probably try taking the airport express metro to Sanyuanqiao, then get a taxi from there.

Yes, the ill-regulated personal car drivers are not trustworthy and always annoying. Go and find a REAL taxi, which has typical taxi decoration and number begins with "京B XXXXX". (I don't know if the first Chinese character stands for "Beijing" will display correctly) If you are not sure, find an Olympic Volunteer, they are everywhere and will help you.

When ever you travel in Beijing on Taxi's, have the desitination in Chinese or FORGET IT! You say Tianimen Square they look at you with a "What the". Also think about luggage. The taxis are Protons so don't look at heading back to the airport with 4 suitcases, etc. We booked a private shuttle BUS back so he could fit our luggage in the back. Only use the two tone cabs, not the red ones...could be other colours, with a stenciled sign on the door of the cab. They are fake cabs...with cheating meters. One last bit of advice...BRING CASH. I went to a big dept store in Beijing and presented my Citibank Mastercard only to be told we don't accept this card...even though they had signs accpting Visa & Mastercard everywhere. After yelling and screaming at them for 10 minutes, they swiped my card, I signed and went on my way.
