will be arriving in Beijing Sept 5th with a male companion. We will have an interpeter but I am wondering how Chinese react to people of African decent. I've never travelled in Asia before so I am expecting some stares but I want to know if they are easy going or short tempered with other races. This may sound funny to you, but it is a real question for a person of color.

i've lived in China for 3 years. Some cities have quite a large population of people "of color" (as you put it...i think). For example, there are many Africans in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. I've never heard or seen any of them encounter any other problems then say a caucasion would (such as language barrier and typical cultural differences). You will get looked at periodically but that's normal for anyone who is not of Asian descent. I'd be surprised if you had any real "racial problems". Just go, have fun, accept them and they'll accept you.

Thanks for your insight. I will go and have a good time. I just like to do a little research before entering uncharted waters. Peace. Athena10

As a Chinese, I think Chinese people has no racialism, whether you are black or white. Also lot of Africans living in Beijing for working and studying, no one would treated them in color-eyes.

Reminded me of our trip outside of Beijing. We happened into a restaurant which was obviously very little, if ever, patronized by Western tourists. We definetely felt as we were the object of wonder and were carefully studies, including many giggles from the waitresses. It was great fun and everyone was very friendly. I think everyone will react curious to outsiders regardless of color but, in genuine polite and affectionate manner. Have fun! Homer
