London to Bayeau

by amysreef Online Now Oct 4, 2008 at 11:24 AM

For Monday Dec 29, 2008 what is easiest way to travel from London to Bayeau?
If by ferry, which UK departure port pleast and France arrival port please?
At France arrival port, is there a car rental company that I can pickup car and drop in Bayeau?
I only speak/read English, will I be able to find MSM and then Bayeau easily?
Many Thanks
Amy

You can go by ferry, or by Eurostar then train from to Le Havre (say) and hire a car there.

You'll be able to read the road signs with names, and road-sign symbols are pretty universal in Europe. Take a phrasebook with you all the same.

    driving.drive-alive.co.uk/dr...

has lots of useful (essential?) information.

Ferry to Le Havre might be easiest (or Deauville). Both go from Portsmouth.

    ferrybooker.com/home/home.as...

will give you an overview of what's available.

Google 'car hire' + the name of the port to find companies. You should have no problem.

    www.eurostar.com

    www.sncf.com for French train times/fares.

Cherbourg would be a feasible port as well, or even Newhaven-Dieppe.

Not being funny or anything, but I assume you have looked at a map? E.g. geocities.com/bourbonstreet/.... This will show you that Mont St. Michel (I assume that's what you mean by MSM) is near St. Malo (not convenient from London, ferries are from Portsmouth, Weymouth, Poole) while the closest port to Bayeux is Ouistreham (port of Caen, ferries from Portsmouth), followed by Le Havre (which you can reach from Newhaven). Cherbourg is about equidistant between the 2 but you would also have to start from Portsmouth. See directferries.co.uk/france.h...
I would therefore recommend Newhaven-Le Havre, or failing that, Dieppe, when you can go down to MSM by autoroute via Rouen; but you'll have to double back on yourself for Bayeux.
Local drop off in Bayeux might be more likely with Europcar www.europcar.com
or www.autoeurope.com but check office locations and hours - Hertz and Avis, at least, offices are closed on Sundays.
