All Saints opening hours

by Sjalen Online Now Oct 5, 2004 at 12:25 PM

Planning our All Saints week in Bavaria, I am trying to figure out what's possible on All Saints itself (1 Nov). Being familiar with Germany on Sundays and how closed things are, I realise that tourist attractions will still be open but I also realise that I will go to mainly catholic Bavaria (even if Franconia is also included). So, any tips on where NOT to go to be met by closed doors? Is Munich itself as closed as even London can get on Easter or is there hope for life? Should we spend the day in some mountain resort instead (weather permitting) or is public transport just awful then?

Sorry...I clicked to fast... Apart from Munich, we are off to Nürnberg and then we don't know. Very flexible, with thoughts mainly about Bamberg, Garmisch P, Rothenburg oT.

Hiya Charlotta, As you already said, All Saints is mainly a public holiday in the catholic parts of Germany. I think the local public transports in these areas will follow the sunday timetables, whereas the Railway (Deutsche Bahn) might operate as on every usual weekday, except some local trains. Please check at: reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/qu... I hope this helps Holger :o)

OK, so I should stick to something along the major railway at least. Thanks! :)

Hi! You better look in the internet for the museums and spots you wanna visit. I was in Bavaria in that time, some spots are open the 1st, others closed. BTW: If you are around Bad Toelz the 6th, go to watch the Leonhardiritt. It is a very traditional religious parade, all people in traditional bavarian clothes. Have a look at my Bavaria page to get some impressions. But there are lots of tourists. There is a Leonhardiritt also in Murnau and Benediktbeuren, but I don't know the exact date. have a nice trip

Hi, I think you can expect most places to be closed and the DB trains will run on a Sunday schedule, even if they go into Hessen where Nov.1rst is not a holiday. It's a major shopping day in the areas in Hessen close to the borders with Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg. Museums will be closed because Nov 1rst is a Monday this year and museums are closed on Mondays. So just hope for good weather and enjoy nature in a mountain resort. Christine

Nature indeed - or stick to the north and pop across to Hessen you say...hm...alternatively, just wander around the streets of some picturesque town I suppose. Somewhere where all you need is your camera and a cosy restaurant... My six-year-old has just discovered a picture of Neuschwanstein in a book...ehum...as a keen Disney film watcher, she now wants to go there during this trip...I hope November is a calm(er) time to visit then at least...? We've got to do something SHE wants too - it's a family holiday. Besides, a week is not nearly enough to see Bavaria so I'm sure we'll be back. I've wanted to go to Passau ever since I went to Budapest in the late 80s for instance and then there's Berechtesgaden where you can't even get up all the mountains in November and then there's Regensburg which is more of a summer destination with its boat trips on my beloved Danube... Well, you hear I'll have to go back even before I've gone there the first time properly :)))
