    • From Tropea / Reggio Calabria to Stromboli / Volcano

      Tropea Apr 19, 2015 at 3:24 AM

      Hi,
we will be in Zambrone since 15/06 till 20/06.

Do You think there will be a chance to hike near the volcano of Stromboli in this timing?
I read that the ferries are starting since 20/06. Maybe some small agency can offer this trip....?

But I am not interessted in one of those mentioned trips, where You can just visit the Stromboli for 1 hour and use it for shopping or something and then You can see the island just from the boat. We would like to have a hiking trip to see it really from the top.

We will have a car, so we can depart from both areas, Tropea or Reggio Calabria.

If there will be a combination let's say with Volcano island, it would be completely perfect. But this would not be probably possible to combine during one day.

Thanks in advance for Your advices and recommendations or experiences.

      S.

    • AREA to stay in Elba

      Isola d' Elba Apr 9, 2015 at 4:25 AM

Travelling to Elba with my Mum and Dad at the end of May, beginning of June.

Due to the Bus time tables from Florence, we would be on Elba for 4nights.

Ideally like to pick 1 hotel for the 4nights, and do day trips from that base.

      Tried to research the best area to stay in Elba, with no luck. Suggestions seem to be;

Marina di Campo/ Porto Azzuro/ Cavoli.

Obviously I need to narrow it down to 1.
They are both 50yrs old, we would like to see all of the 'touristy' things that Elba has to offer, and also a couple of walks, and a beach.

So in short, best AREA to stay in Elba.

      Thanks

      Brindisi or Porte Cesareo?

      Basilicata Jan 27, 2014 at 5:30 AM

Our coming holiday I would like to spend exploring "the heel" and geografically both Brindisi and Porto Cesareo suit well for short rides everyday. But my children (teenagers) are very specific about the beach. To be more specific, the sea. They like when you can snork. The water should be clear and there are should be some species to watch (no matter fish or crab), they also don't like it when it is shallow for quite a long time ( as it is along Venice Rivierra). Could you please help me with a choice?

      Matera hotels?

      Matera Aug 25, 2011 at 7:55 PM

Are you familiar with Matera? We may be in the city for 2 nights to do some photo-shooting, and I'd like to know what hotels you can recommend that have cave bedrooms and spectacular views of the town (I'm cheating on a couple of the photos, to shoot them from my bedroom window!). I don't mind if it's pricey, but it has to be worth the cost. I'm leaning toward the Hotel Sassi, and recent reviews of the place are favorable.

We want something atmospheric and not too expensive. The Old Town sounds like what we are after, but is it far from the beach? An apartment with two double bedrooms or a bed & breakfast would be great or a hotel (assuming not too expensive). All the websites I've found so far are for accomodation which appear to be quite some distance from the Old Town and/or requires a car. Do you have any suggestions?

Anyone know the best way for me to get from Naples to Avigliano (by way of Avellino) and about how long it will take? Hello all, I have 3 questions for those more knowledgeable than I am: 1) :?: why is it that most Anglo-saxons hardly ever mention Basilicata/Calabria in forums etc. and expats too, even Brits, seem to avoid these areas in relocation? 2) :?: I am planning a visit there and would like to know which communes-towns are badly impacted by depopulation & out-migration of young locals, and if you think that a westerner might be welcome (or feel comfortable) to spend a few months there 3) :?: which coastal towns in Basilicata (both sides)and which on the Ionic side of Calabria north of Crotone have the loveliest sandy beaches? or the nicest to stay in for a while?
