Basel or Mulhouse

We (4) are planning to spend one week in Basel or Mulhouse during next Advent to visit the region nearby: Colmar, Riquewihr, Freiburg and obviously Basel and Mulhouse. We need your help on which city to choose as a basis of our travel. Which one has the best train connections to France and Germany? Is Basel much more expensive than Mulhouse? We need also a clean, safe and good value hotel not far from the train station. Suggestions are welcomed. Thanks so much.
