I am planning a trip within the next year and I was wondering if it would be wise to rent a car while I am there. I plan on going to the beach every chance that I get, but I am not sure if I should drive there. A friend of mine has mention that while she was there, she took buses to the beach, but I am not sure I want to be stuck on a bus schedule while I am having fun in the sun. Is there anyone out there that can find a solution to my problem?
Hi, I was in Colombia in October 2007 and I don´t think you would be stuck on a bus schedule. The buses in whole Colombia are going very often and nearly everytime you have more choices to choose the most convinient bus for you. But, of course, if you prefer rent a car, you will also have a choice to do so.

This is not the United States where you rent a car at the airport. I travel for business all the time in the States and just grab a car with randmcnally.com directions and I good to go. The streets in Barranquilla are like a bee hive filled with darting big buses, small cabs, motor bikes, pedestrians, and donmkey drawn carts. Cabs are very econimical ways to travel and I am sure over a months period of time a rental would be twice the price. Traveling to Cartagena 80 miles away by small "puertato puerta" buses can be @13US. Barranquilla is on a river so I am not sure about the beaches you spoke about...maybe you meant Cartagena

What jdoyle4811 says is true overall. You probably want to take a defensive driving course before driving most everywhere in Latin America. But there are many beaches 25, 30, 45 minutes off Barranquilla, some nicer than others. Plus a car would allow you to go East to Santa Marta and La Guajira and West to Cartagena and beyond. Of course, as you should do whenever you go to a new place, try to make friends with trustworthy locals who may guide you as to where not to go at certain times, particularly if on your own.

If you're staying in Barranquilla. Use Taxi's. If you want to go to Cartegena, take a bus. Barranquilla isn't a real hard city/map to understand, but the driving is not for the unfamiliar. PLUS, taxi's and buses are cheap! MORE than 1/2 the cars in Barranquilla are taxi's... they're everywhere!
