hi i think a good site to read is virtualtourist! you may not have discovered yet that we also have travel pages here made by vters making tips and showing their pics on many places around the world...great for getting good accommodation tips, where to stay etc. I also very much like the Rough Guide for Spain...it has excellent ideas for what to see and where to stay. Augusst can be very hot in Spain so bear that in mind - if you are travelling with children you probably want to stay somewhere with airconditioning - the youth hostels in Spain I have in general found to be very good, reasonably priced with good facilities.

Hi! Just returned from Barcelona yesterday! Great city! We stayed in the Eixample area which is very close to all the sites, yet not in the noisy center! We booked an apartment from Habitat Apartments agency and we are very pleased we did so because it was comfortable for a family of three and close to everything! Metro stops, bakeries, eateries, cafes. Make sure you book the Sagrada Familia tickets on line to avoid the queues! Enjoy!
