Barcelona in January (17-21)

by duffy_bear Online Now Jan 10, 2004 at 8:30 AM

I am travelling to Barcelona on Saturday 17th Jan. We are going to watch Barca play on the Saturday evening and then we have three days to explore. I know most of the sights that we want to see but was wondering if most things are open at this time of the year. I cannot find out if the cable car at Montjuic is running or whether the fountains are lit up at this time of the year. Does anyone know? Also, could anyone recommend some traditional, fair priced, restaurants? Thanks very much for your anticipated help.

Hi Duffy Bear, I visited Barcelona in October. Maybe I can help you with a good restaurant address. We once where in 'EL CHOQUITO' , Rambla 98. We found the food very nice - we didn't pay much - although there was a lot of people, we didn't have to wait long! Anyway, the choice of restaurants is enormous. Enjoy the football! (unfortunately we hadn't that occasion!) Greetings, Marietje

We went to Barcelona last January and everything seemed to be open except on Mondays. I can recommend a super tapas bar which has a menu on the place mat. You can see what you are going to get. It was very busy which is always a good sign and the food was delicious.

    PLEASE, whatever you do...

if you go to Barcelona you MUST visit one of the many buildings, palaces, parks, church, etc builted by one of the greatest architects in the world: Antoni Gaudi. You MUST visit one... those buildings are... alive!!! Yes... Please go. I went to all: Casa Milá (or La Pedrera), Casa Vincens, Palau Guell, Park Guell, The Church of La Sagrada Familia. Is a MUST. Gaudi. Remember Gaudi.

Would love to know what the tapas bar is and where. As regards Gaudi, the Familia is the first thing I want to see, then Parc Guell and Casa Mila!!!!

Last Feb the cable to Montjuic was running, though the route (funicular?) to Tibidabo wasn't. Apart from that, everything seemed open. Enjoy the footy, I saw Barca vs Inter last year, amazing. If you have any veggies, see my pages: if you haven't visit L'IIla De Gracia anyway.

    Palacio Guell

by carolinaEspada Online Now Jan 11, 2004 at 2:56 AM

I almost missed Palacio Guell when I was in Barcelona. I was packing because I was leaving next day and, dont ask me why, I read something about Palacio Guell. I made a phone call. Next and last guided tour was starting in 10 minutes. I begged; I´m a venezuelan journalist. Please wait for me. I´,m on my way. I took a taxi. I arrived 5 minutes late but they were waiting for me. This is a WOW I CANT BELIEVE PLACE. In a very narrow street that leads to the rambla, is this tall, narrow, dark, building. GENIOUS DALI managed to make it look wide and luminous (using perspective tricks, mirrors, and lamps). I was soooooo happy I didnt miss it. Since then I call him Saint Antoni Gaudi. Please enjoy... and when you go to the Park Guell and sit on the Trencadi, or go to La Pedrera-Casa Mila, remember: those buidings breathe. They are alive... You will feel it. MUCH HAPPINES IN BARCELONA, which is not a city is a privilege.
