Please note that we visited the area 6 years ago and some of the info might be out of date.
You might like to read my page on Montserrat at "Spectacular Montserrat" - Monistrol de Montserrat by sirgaw You'll need to start as you said at the Place Espanya rail station and if still available, purchase the package that includes rail travel and a trip up the mountain on the spectacular funicular. As my wife is a wimp we did not travel on the cable car but went both ways on the rack railway - quite amazing too.
Suggest you get there well before mid day when the choir sings.

If you're using public transport, another option can be taking the bus L10 from near your hotel to Av. Carrilet. However, I'm not sure you can buy the special tikets including cable cars, etc. there.
