I went to the gambia jan 2010 and I'm returning Jan 12th 2011. We were told the bright green and yellow taxi's were safer. It's not the people by the way they are wonderful it's the safety of the vehicle that is the risk! sort out the fare before you set off (including return)they will wait for you and bring you back!! not sure about US$ though.

there a 2 types of Taxies: The yellow and green ones: They either take up to 4 passengers on certain routes, which is very cheap, or - in your case - make towntrips, which means they bring you to the destination of your choice.
The green ones ae for tourists and more expensive. In any case you have to discuss the price.
Do you already know where you are going to?
