Bangkok has a hot, tropical climate with daytime temperature reaching the mid-30s Celsius throughout the year. November to February is the driest time of year and the most popular with tourists. March, April and May are the hottest months, and the rainy season runs from May to October. During the wet season short showers are likely during the afternoon, though some days it will rain all day.

Here is the 30 year averages: tmd.go.th/EN/province_stat.p... As you can see, the end of August, beginning of September, is the rainiest period. That said, the rain will usually come in isolated cloudbursts, not all day rain over the entire region.

Expect rain but also you may be able to bargain for accommodation. Wrong time to visit!

Even in August there will be around a half million tourists showing up. Anytime you can grab a holiday vacation in Thailand is really okay. You do get some more rain at this time compared to December - February but most of the time you will also have enough sunshine to make the day worthwhile. I prefer the weather in Bangkok and nearby Pattaya during this period compared to what you have in Phuket. Most of the time the weather will break enough for you to do what you have to do. In any event have a small fold up umbrella in your bag when up and about. In Bangkok when you see street vendors rushing around to put some plastic over their items for sale expect the rain to fall shortly. In Pattaya you can even feel a change in the air and know you better head for cover like a mall, movie theater, bar, restaurant or find something to do something indoors. Often rain falls at night time too when it matters less. Wear cheap shoes during the rainy season. Most of the sidewalks are raised to keep you out of puddles but there may be some artful dodging needed. tmd.go.th/en/province.php?id... Being able to get a reduced price on some pricy hotels is a benefit. Also, most cheaper budget priced hotels you can often get with a walk-in. I like the freshness of the grasses and plants during the rainy season. The grass actually looks alive instead of that normal dried out look you get when there is less rain. Some fruits and vegetables are more abundant during this time of year. Up to you.
