24 hour stopover help

by jscheib Online Now Jun 11, 2012 at 4:10 AM

I am arriving late evening at airport. What is the best area to book a hotel if I take train to city and need to get to train station next evening to go to Chiang Mai? Also want to know if hotels are ok with leaving luggage while out sightseeing for the day? Appreciate any suggestions and recommendations for hotels in budget to mid range. My first visit to Thailand. Thanks

Any hotel near the MRT "underground" would suit you. There is an MRT station that exits directly into Hualumpong RR station. Living here, I know little about hotels. Hopefully, someone else can pipe in with some recs.

I have always foundn the "lower" end nof Sukhumvit Road to b a good place for reasonably priced hotels. By "lower" I mean sois (side roads) about one to twelve in number. Unfortunately, it is not great for accessing Hualumpong station. I know many travellers use the area round Khao San Road where there are plenty of budget options and that would be closer to the station. I found the Federal Hotel on soi 11 Sukhumvit to be perfectly comfortable and reasonably priced, should you decide on that side of town. Here is a link. members.virtualtourist.com/m... I have always found Thai hotels to be very accommodating regarding leaving luggage if you want to go for a wander. The train North is an absolute delight, you'll love it. Here is an idea of what to expect. "Backpacker Express." - SRT Trains Tip by planxty Hope this assists, fergy.

I would suggest you take a hotel near the main station Hualampung. Hotels are normally safe to leave your luggage. Plenty of sites where you can search for hotels in that area, can't help you much as i always stay in other part of city.

I agree, Lower Sukhumvit road. I would pick On8 hotel on Sukhumvit soi 8. It is next to the skytrain. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to get there at night by taxi and 10 dollars. There is plenty of food and "entertainment" there late at night. You could have time in the morning to go shopping at MBK, 5 minutes down the road by skytrain, or visit the King's palace for the morning. If you stay at the airport, you are far from the tourist sites in Bangkok and anything else that could be considered interesting.
