Safe place to 'store' non-backpaper type luggage for 2 weeks whilst in Thailand?

by RTW2013 Online Now May 18, 2012 at 8:21 PM

I'll be travelling to Sydney later this year but will be travelling via Bangkok and hope to visit various islands etc in Thailand during this time (2 weeks). However, as I am spending a year in Oz, I'm not exactly 'backpacking' and will be travelling with a suitcase and various things that I shall need for when I'm there (laptop, etc). My plan is to just dump my main luggage somewhere safe so that I can then pick it up again before heading to Sydney because it'd be impossible to island hop comfortably having to lug everything around. Instead I plan to just take essentials in a small bag in order to spend the couple weeks luggage free. Only problem is, where do I leave my main luggage where it will be safe? Has anyone else ever had a similar problem? How did you manage it? I can't be the only 'non-backpacker'! I have heard that they have lockers in BKK but that they do not accept anything valuable which would make me scared to then leave my stuff there as I doubt I could complain if 'valuables' then went missing? Has anyone used this? Help!?

I once left bags at the airport but they are not too keen on keeping them for long periods. If you are staying at a more upmarket hotel perhaps this would be your solution. I have left luggage (including valuables) at bottom of the range guest houses on many occasions and nothing has gone astray, so i think that says a lot. Many of the thefts at the cheaper places are stolen by fellow travellers.

I think just about every upmarket hotel would be happy to store it for you for a small fee. I have travelled a lot around south east asia as a tour leader for upscale groups and we have often stored luggage at various hotels and this has never been a problem.

Hey, I've stored my luggage and another extended backpack in the storage room of a chain hotel in BKK, as I had another come back reservation to the same hotel in one week time, but am sure even u dont stay there, for free and/or for a small fee they will keep ur luggage safe ... As the former posters have also mentioned, I've also several times used airport storage rooms for my suitcases, but to be honest, I always prefer hotel storage rooms rather then airports, as in most of them there r surveillance cameras in hotel luggage rooms which r integrated w the main security cam system of the whole hotel and they r not "left over" as in most airports storages ... :)

Thanks all. I shall check out those options. I like the idea of it all staying at a hotel that I will be going back to and staying the night before travelling out (I hadn't thought of that!) Thanks again.

Curt, have you used this service yourself? 100 Baht a week seems a bit 'too good to be true' tbh and we all know how those Thai's love a tourist scam!

Living here, I haven't used the place myself. But, Here is a good thread about the facility. http://tinyurl.com/78sdlkl

I used an airport luggage storage facility (there were 3 to choose from) with no problems. We landed, stored excess (4 hardside suitcases) then caught a plane to Chang Mai with one bag apiece. We were in and out of the airport in almost no time. I do not remember the price but it was reasonable and we picked-up the excess luggage 2 weeks later as we left Thailand, enroute to Kuwait. We did not need to move the luggage far from baggage claim to the storage facility coming or going.

If you are staying in the Khaosan road area or any other place really, just find a nice hotel where you want to stay and ask if you can leave some baggage for a couple of weeks while you going island hopping. Just about most backpackers are doing this and the guesthouses and hotels making a little bit of money from it. you will have to pay in advance before you leave but is worth it and like you said who wants to go Island hopping with a suitcase. Just padlock your suitcase and pay in advance which is not alot and come back in a couple of weeks to pick it up. It's easy.
