Yes it will be safe to travel to and within Bk. I was in Bk for the last 4 yrs and at times the protests were ongoing. I had no issues with safety. Taxi rides may be slower due to traffic but BK traffic is always heavy. Just stay away from the protest area and don't wear red...

During political demonstrations tourists are not the targets. It is the government or government officials who they are demonstrating for or against depending on what color is predominant in the crowd. Most of the demonstrations can be avoided. If you are nosy and put yourself between demonstrators and police (like some stupid tourists have done) don't be surprised if something happens. If a demonstration is scheduled just avoid that area! Your hotel front desk will know where to avoid. There may be a demonstration in one small area of Bangkok but the rest of the city is business as usual. No hotels booked and still fearful just head on out to another city in Thailand. Thailand is bigger than the UK so there are many places to go to. Most of the tourists who lost money cancelling flights during the last demonstration or two probably wished they had done otherwise. UP TO YOU!

The demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, in the Ratchprasong area, the area of the fiasco. Beyond showing solidarity, it is intended more as a commemoration, than a demonstration. With the heavy rains, last night, and more predicted, the turn out might be lessened. The Ratchaprasong area is centered at the intersection of Ratchadamri and Ploenchit / Rama I. This is the coner where Centralworld and the Erawan Shrine are located. If you are concerned, avoid this area. Saturday might be a good day to check out the Grand Palace area. No, i shouldn't be concerned for your safety as the Thais are not targeting foreigners, but the government. However stay away from the area where the demo will occur.

The current government is aligned with the red shirts. The demonstration isn't "targeting" anyone. Like I said, this is a remembrance. However, the "police" dance to their own drummer, and are expected to number 1,200. There is no telling what tune they may choose. Although I, personally, don't expect any trouble, I wouldn't visit the area this Saturday.

It was meant more as clarification, than correction. The risk here, as during the tragic event, is the police.
