Your hotel may have a party. You can go visit a few bars. Some bars may have Christmas parties. Go to church - yeah, there are churches in Bangkok too! Some hotels have New Years Eve parties. You may have to pay even if you do not go to it. Depends on the hotel. Some bars and nightclubs throw parties. Other than visiting relatives, what would you do in your country for Christmas? Try to keep the same routine. Up to you.

Wing it with a friend....if you do not have one, I am sure that they can be found. Most Thais' do not believe in Christmas as their religon is Buddist, so it's like a regular day for them. Depending on how you like to celebrate Christmas, like going to mid-nite mass, opening presents on Christmas Day etc...it is up to you to gather a group or be with one that follows the same traditions as you do. New Years Eve is different and everyone celebrates with the countdown, fireworks, celebration bash... You just have to know where you want to be at the time. Celebrate NYE in the major cities as they set up for the big party in the streets so they can make money from this holiday. You will find many vendors outdoors in the street where a celebration might be held. In Bangkok it is all over the city where people might gather the most and they have fireworks going off around the river. The Central or World Plaza, the streets may closed off so people gather outside to celebrate with vendors and bands everywhere....plus make shift beer gardens and tents...depends on the promoters. In Pattaya it's at the Bali Hai Pier.....in Phukett it's in Patong and Krabi it was the beach. Where ever you are in Thailand, ask a local where the main gathering area for celebrating NYE might be. In each of the cities in Thailand, I always found the party that way. Check my travel pages and you will see that I have been to quite a few on NYE year after year. It is a day of excitement as it is so inexpensive to bring in a new year over there. cheers tommy x and thanks for the tips.

Ohhhh my... So many details, so many thanks!!! I am not travelling alone, but I, personally, will go for the first time in Asia. And it's a special time of the year, too, so from what you've told me, we'll have no problems finding parties and holiday spirit around. Thank you so much Tommy (I'm also checking out your Thailand page :D) and Richelli, for giving me so precise details (I will make a list with places you've mentioned and check which will suit us best). Sadly, parts of Thailand, specially Bangkok, are dealing with bad flooding this days, so maybe we wont find them in their best tourist mood. But we're happy to party and happy to help in case too :D Thanks again! Petra

Yes, I'm very excited to discover this great people... One more thing, Richelli. In this 3 weeks trip from the end of the year and mid of January 2012, we'll be spontaneous with our plans. But we want to visit at least one other country from that part of Asia. We were thinking about Cambodia and/or Vietnam, but we don't know how the flooding situation is there. Do you happen to know and to recommend another great cultural place? What would be your first choice after Thailand? Thanks, Petra

Thanks again, Richelli! I just checked the page with the vt meet. Yesss, it's such a dream place and great people will meet up, but sadly i'll be back to Bangkok those days, ready to finish my trip. Philippines is simply beautiful and I'm planning it on a future trip. Maybe see you in some vt meetings sometimes soon :D Have a great time in January if you're attending that meet. Petra
