I did Samui to Bangkok a year ago and as there were four of us we negotiated down to 525 baht per person for the boat/bus/train, but it might be easier to negotiate in Samui than on KSR.

This site gives you prices and timetables of the Bangkok/Ko Samui trip.
The train station is called Hualampung and should not cost more than 100 baht by taxi.

Airport Express Buss AE3 is no more in operation to promote the Rail LInk, if you have time then take City Link Train from airport to Makkasan and then Bus # 556 to Ratchadamnoen Klang (after the Democracy Monument) for Khaosan Road Train Ticket 40 Bhat and Bus was 20 Baht (Train operate from 6 am till 12 PM) if arriving midnight then taxi is the only option and there are no night surcharge applied.

If you opt for the Taxi then go to the ground floor, you may find long que for the Budget/Meter Taxi there will be 50 Baht Airport Surcharge plus 45 Baht Toll if use expressway which some time more congested then the free way, plus the meter which start from 30 Baht, actual fare will be depending on how much traffic on the road but may cost 300-350 Baht in all its about 35 km ride.

Khaosan Road to Hualampong station 6.5 Baht from Pra Arthit Road
From Khaosan Road to Don Muang Taxi 200-250 Baht or by Bus # 15 first to Siam Square 6.5 Baht and then Bus # 29 24 hour can catch it from National Art Gallery Phaya Thai Road opposite MBK Mall 18 Baht (spare at least 2 hours before the boarding time) the Bus Stop is at the Don Muang Railway station
