RE: Three cubs without their mum (2005)
Two of the cubs have died, and one is still alive. Two cubs were killed while trying to cross the highway at night, in two separate incidences. After much debate, the Parks staff did capture the remaining cub. He was in the Calgary Zoo for a while, and they were careful not to habituate it to humans, but of course that is very difficult to do. He was finally sent to the Grizzly Refuge in Golden.
Bear 66, who loved humans, was also famous for coming across a homeless person who was sleeping in the woods, near the Banff Centre of Fine Arts. He awoke to find the bear and cubs staring him in the face. He screamed and ran, and sustained a very minor wound from being bit in the behind by Bear 66 (obviously being playful as she could have torn him to shreds) The worse wounds he sustained were on his barefeet from running away from the grizzlies on sharp rocks.
Let's hope the remaining cub does well. Unfortunately, grizzlies do not do well in captivity.
