Hi Guys We are planning a 3-4 day visit to Bali in July. In this period we will try to do a tour of the island. We would like to stay somewhere near or at the beach. But in a place thats more 'down to earth' as opposed to fancy/ full of shops etc. So no big high end resorts etc. I was told Seminyak is more of a fancy place in that sense. Any ideas or suggestions?
We stayed at Villa Purnama in the Kerobokan area which was located in the peaceful and genuine neighborhood. Canggu beach and Tanah Lot temple were nearby, although not too near, a long walk indeed, or a short motorbike ride. The staff was friendly and all belonged to the same neighborhood. A lot depends upon what you mean by a 'tour of the island', but if you want a more down to earth place than the 'made for tourist' areas of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Sanur, try the Amed area. It is a good couple of hours from the airport but there are some nice beaches, nice walks, good snorkelling (and diving if you are interested.) It would be possible to arrange day trips from Amed to other parts of the island.

I've also stayed in the Kerabokan area. It was very local, rural and not near a beach. Nusa Dua is probably the most upmarket area. If I went back to Bali I would stay in Seminyak. Lots to do there and the beach is great

I prefer Sanur (old, real Bali) and would stay there, again, at the same hotel near the beach. In fact the restaurant opens to the beach front! Tips and info are on my Bali page! Enjoy Bali!

My last trip to Bali I stayed at Villa Travis in Umalas in the Kerobokan area. Very quiet and private and you can rent horses to follow the horse trail through the forest there to a private beach. Very nice place and not too far from all the tourist places.

I too love to stay in Sanur there are many budget options . We like to stay in the ugly duckling hotel on the main road running through sanur behind the ducks Nutz restaurant. Small place run by an Australian couple about40 per room per night with small breakfast included. Heading there myself in August for 5 days of rest and relaxation massages. Check out my Sanur pages for more things to do in sanur and Bali
