Hi! Me and a friend are going to Bali in Juli and August. We are planning on booking a cheap hostel from home for the first week or so, but is it necessary to book for the rest of the trip? We would like to feel free and be able to travel, as we like and find our hostels along the way. Is that possible, or do You think everything will be booked??
Bali (and Indonesia) is not good for online booking and hostels are not very common. You usualy get better deals by looking around. For online, not the cheapest but at least worth the money, in Kuta Sayang Maha Mertha Hotel € 15, in Padangbai Zen Inn € 17, both for 2 bedroom with breakfast, but in both places you should be able to get a room for € 10, in Padangbai Topi Inn is having a dorm.

I was in Bali and Java last july and August and I had no trouble finding cheap accomodation everywhere that I went. I didn't need to use hostels as the cost of Hotels was cheap...Most were single room with all ammenities..around20.00 night some even less..I really don't beleive that you will have any problems with accomodation at all...but be very wary in Bali ...can be a dangerous place ...see my tips...have a good holiday..Java and Lombok are also good for a visit..

no of course not everything will be booked out. BUt-I guess you are again one of those young OZzies??-then If your idea of a smash holiday is to be drink too much among fellow countrysheila's/rickies, then those places that cater to them might be full- but not the more sedate and quiet dozens of other places right on in the same lane. As above; hoStels-in the true meaning of that word, are a rarity in Indo and mainly cashing in into ignorant newbies who do not know any better.

Hi Julie! As you probably already know, July and August is peak tourist season over here, so it’s busy to say the least. That said, no, it’s not impossible by any means to find good places at good rates to stay without advance booking. There are no such things as hostels here, rather we call the cheapest accommodations homestays or losmans. I totally agree with you that it’s always far better to not book in advance unless absolutely necessary. I prefer being able to see the room in advance, and to check out the area first. While that’s more of challenge here in Bali during July and August, it is by no means “mission impossible” be you Ozzie or not, like to party or not, (as if that matters). ;) Cheers and have a great trip!
