Could you please clarify. Can it be used on Sundays? Because it is not quite clear from the text here bkv.hu/en/travel_cards/budap...
'workdays only' is referred to the card or to the boat services?

According to the site it is 'permanently closed'. But someone told me that it is reopened? I cannot find any information on that. Can someone living in Budapest confirm this? Or is it one of the 'counterfeits'?

      re: train ticket cancellation/refund

      Budapest May 22, 2013 at 9:21 AM

Can you cancel a train e-ticket purchased online through the Hungarian Mav-Start system, and receive a refund, if you are able to notify them before your trip? Can this be done online, or do you have to call the number and/or do this in person at the station? (if this is even possible) I tried to read the international travel regulations posted on the site, but they are hard to understand on this. Thanks.

    • Cant book 'Own Compartment'

      Budapest Jun 10, 2013 at 6:47 PM

I am trying to book 2 places for my husband and I on sleeper car from Budapest to Brasov thru elvira.mav-start.hu/elvira.d... . We want to have own compartment for the two of us. There is an option for this as displayed on the booking site. However when we tick this option box , it says not available. We tried for all dates up to 3 months ahead. When we choose just sleeper car, we do get seats offered on 3 berth sleeper car. But that would mean my husband and I will be in separate compartment as the compartment will be gender specific. Does anyone knows how I can go about buying this online? If I have to buy this arrangement at the station, I am wondering why does MAV provide this option online

      2 day Itinerary for Budapest

      Budapest Yesterday

      Hi Everyone,

I am actually a native Hungarian, but grew up in New Zealand, and since moving here, have only been back once.
I will be in Budapest for 5 days in August, with my husband, and for 2 of those days my best friend is joining me from NZ.

We want to do a 2 day see a bit of everything itinerary so I can give my friend a good feel of Budapest in the limited time they are there. Everything else thats missed, my husband and I will do in the remaining days.

I have been researching on suggested itineraries and what to see, and have made a rough plan, I would just like to know how logical the order I have chosen is.

      Day 1.
      Chain Bridge
      Royal Palace
      Matthias Church
      Fisherman's Bastion
      Vaci Utca
      Jewish Quarter / Great Synagogue

      Day 2
      Heroes Square
      City Park / Vajdahunyad Castle
      Andrassy Ut
      Opera House
      St Stephens Basilica
      Parliament

Somewhere on those two days we'd also like to visit the Grand Market Hall, although I am unsure how long we'd need there, and where it would best fit!

My husband and I will also do an evening river cruise on one of the other days.

What do the Budapest experts think of the way I have split the two days? is there anything missing? any suggestions on how to make it more logical?

      Thanks heaps!

Day trip to Esztergom, Visegrad, Szentendre

      Hungary Jun 10, 2013 at 4:30 PM

      Hi Everyone,

I am wanting to do a day trip to include Esztergom, Visegrad, Szentendre, or maybe just two of those.
The day we have free to do this, 30 August, annoyingly is between seasons with the boat line that goes up there.
Their high season literally ends a few day earlier, and low season starts a few days later.
So not sure how to get up there.

I saw Viator offer a Day bus trip but the reviews on it have been pretty average, and quite expensive ($120NZD per person).

I am thinking of maybe train or buses? How difficult is it to fit 2 or 3 of these places in?
Is it better to just do Szentendre? Is there enough to see there to fill up a day?

      Thanks heaps

      Eszter

First tim ein Hungary, looking for trip planning suggestions

by Shade_Jon Online Now May 1, 2008 at 1:46 AM

We're four adults flying in from Tel Aviv, although we may fly in through a connecting city. We have a place near Balaton (time share) for a week starting Sept 6 and are looking for suggestions on how to plan the trip. I thought of the following: a weekend in Budapest, drive out to Balaton, hang out for five days, next weekend in Vienna. That means flying in to Budapest, renting a car for a week with a different location drop off, flying out from Vienna, and two weekends B&Bs or hotels. I fear this may be too expensive, so I'm willing to compromise: skip Vienna or do a day trip to see it. But I'm not sure you can "see" even part of Vienna in one day, not to mention drive both ways in one day. Does it make sense to try to fly in to the Balaton through some city in Europe and skip Budapest and Vienna? Or fly directly to Budapest and drive to Balaton and then back? Yehuda

Can anyone please end the utter confusion over these blasted ticks - and is there anywhere that I can purchase a tick remover in the UK - only seems to be pretty crap ones on ebay. by petite_emma Online Now Jan 11, 2008 at 5:53 AM

I'm thinking of going to the Balaton Sound festival in July, which is in Zamárdi, on the south shore of Lake Balaton. A friend's mum lives near the airport in Sármellék, to the west of the lake, I and was wondering how difficult it would be to travel from there to the festival each day. Are there local bus or train services and, if so, will they run late at night? Roughly how much would a taxi/mini bus be? I know I could camp but being under canvas in a possible 100 degree heat wouldn't be too fun and I also don't fancy my chances with the elephant-sized mosquitoes. Thanks in advance for any replies

Hello, Just wondering if anyone can help at all. We have booked flights to Balaton airport in July, but need to somehow make our way over to Novi Sad in Serbia for the Exit Festival. We have found a company that does bus transfers for £50 return but this seems a little steep. Besides, they need money upfront, which we aren't to keen to give them so early on! Thanks very much T
