    • Stopping at Ataturk airport en route to Ghana. Is it worth a trip into Istanbul city centre?

      Istanbul Mar 30, 2014 at 3:11 PM

Hi, I am travelling to Ghana and will be stopping at Ataturk airport for 17 and a half hours. We will be arriving at Ataturk around 11 pm Turkish time. Is it worth travelling to the city centre for some food and a look around? What is the best method of getting to the city centre? Are places to eat open late in the night? Is it safe at night? I was thinking of sticking to the Taksim square area. I tend to get bored easily and would like to leave the airport but I am unsure whether this is wise. This is my first proper trip out of Europe so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks =).

    • Will Grand Bazaar & Spice Market be open on May 19, 2014?

      Istanbul Apr 2, 2014 at 10:15 AM

      Hello,
I will be in Istanbul on May 19 this year, which is a public holiday (Ataturk Day). I am wondering if the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market will be open on that day, even if it's a holiday.
      Thanks!

    • Help required with our itinerary

      Istanbul Mar 18, 2014 at 9:01 AM

I will be visiting Istanbul next week, staying in Sultanahmet. I've stayed there before so won't have any problems with the attractions we want to visit there. However, our to do list requires several other attractions, which I would appreciate some help with scheduling in I.e. things there are close to eachother that we can do on the same day or in a logical order. We will have 3 full days, to include a Sunday ..

      Spice Bazaar

      Grand Bazaar

      Galata Tower

      Dolmabahce Palace

      Pera Palace Hotel

      Taksim .. Istikal Caddesi

      Pierre Loti Cafe

      The Zorlu Centre

Galata Bridge, Eminonu, Golden Horn area

    • Istanbul on May 1st (Labor Day)

      Istanbul Mar 18, 2014 at 5:51 PM

      Hey
I'm planning a weekend in Istanbul on the first weekend of May.
I was planning to fly there on May 1st or May 2nd , but i'm about worried since I saw May 1st is Labor Day in Turkey, and a search on the internet showed that last year there were a lot of protests and the city was on lock down on that date. Should I fly out on May 2nd then and everything will be fine? or should I just postpone it for another time?

Please advise if this should be an issue or not.
      Thanks!

I visited this hotel over 10 years ago and it was steeped in history, you were even able to use the original birdcage lift! I'maware that it has been taken over by the Jumeirah hotel chain in recent years. Has anybody visited since it has been taken over and is it still considered worth visiting?

Could we easily get to Eyup (Pierre Loti Café) from here via public transport or is the nostalgic tram accessible from here?
I have heard of people leaving the tower and wondering aimlessly and getting lost, which is something I want to try to avoid. All help appreciated ...

I think the kart is very good, once you understand how it works! CEMKIRACs information was most helpful. When I used it before I did have trouble buying credits and on one occasion I lost 20tl!! Could somebody please explain the procedure I simple terms for loading credits onto the card as I must have been doing something wrong before.

      Time to take metro?

      Istanbul Mar 17, 2014 at 7:33 AM

I realize this is probably an impossible question to answer but I would still like an opinion. I am due to arrive in Istanbul at 23.05. Assuming my flight is on time do I have enough time to make it to the last metro train to the city centre. I read somewhere that the trains stop running at midnight.

Comment please on two weeks in Istanbul

      Istanbul Apr 7, 2014 at 7:15 PM

Hi - I am planning on two weeks in Istanbul and have decided on mid- to late April since I have heard that the poppies and other flowers are in full bloom at that time (is this correct?). I will rent an apartment and stay for two weeks in the Sultanamet neighborhood. Between getting there, back and getting over the time change (I am on west coast USA time) I figure I need that much time to see the major sites and experience the area. Does this seem like an appropriate amount of time - I don't want to be rushed. Any suggestions on must sees and must dos.
      Thanks
