We are travelling to Bad Gastein in mid October - two people, age 60 and would like to know if we can move around without renting a car. What are the options? and are they expensive? Thanks Milka
Austrian trains are safe, comfortable and (imo) very reasonably priced. You will be able to find train times, details and fares in English from Salzburg here: http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp (the Austrian railway website) Bad Gastein (two words) has a station, so you will be able to use the train to explore. For example, Salzburg is around 1.5 hours away, one-way fare around 17.60 euro.

once that you arrive in Bad Gastein you will realize that the town is built into a mountain and you will not find a wide area of flat walking except for about 300m in the very centre. Horse-carriages are available, renting a car is absolutely not necessary !
