Look at the Austrian railway site in English: http://www.oebb.at/en/ You'll find train times, details and fares in English. Although Budapest may look near on a map it is actually 300+km away. The train journey takes 6+ hours, with two changes, because it is mostly routed via Vienna. I cannot find a direct bus or train link between the two places. The journey by bus seems quicker but will mean getting to Vienna (or Vienna airport) first and will thus take just as long (if not longer). Timetables and booking in English here: eurolines.at/en/home/travel_... or here orangeways.com/en/budapest-v...

One possibility is to walk across the river to Radgona in Slovenia, and take a bus to Murska Sobota there. From Murska Sobota there is one daily train to Budapest. This is probably the cheapest option. The train leaves Murska Sobota at 12:28 (www.bahn.de has the details). There are frequent buses from Radgona to Murska Sobota, but you best inquire locally once there.

Train to Vienna is 41 Euro, 4 hours (28 Euro, 7.5 hours with "Einfach Raus" ticket), Orangeways (or Volan bus) to Budapest 13 Euro, 3hours. It might be cheaper by local bus Gornja Radgona (just over the border ~ 1 km) to Murska Sobota (~15 km, don´t know if there is a bus) and train from there (~ 5.5 hours) or Maribor (~25 km, train from there about 7 hours). Slovenian railways has some trains for 29 Euro to Budapest, there might be also cheap "City Star" retourne tickets, look for that at VT Member GyuriFT pages slo-zeleznice.si/en/passenge...

Thank you so much for the help! I see it's only about 300 km but it takes more time than I imagined and more money too. As I'll be with 4 friends, do you think that if we rent a car we'll get too much lost? Thank you again

I have no idea whether you will get lost...that depends entirely on your (or your friends') ability to navigate. :-) You can investigate route, route information and driving times on www.viamichelin.com If you do decide to hire a car, and stay overnight, I'd advise you to book a hotel which includes parking. I have no personal experience of parking in central Budapest but it looked to me pretty much the same as all big European cities: not easy and not cheap.
