Which Ice Caves?

by sandysmith Online Now Aug 15, 2009 at 10:48 AM

In a couple of weeks time we will be staying in Scladming we would like to make trip to ice-caves..but there seems to b several in the area. Werfen - just under an hours train ride away plus castle is there. Obertraun - here there is the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car with access to hiking and other ice caves. Takes longer to get here from Scladming any ides which would make for better trip or any other alternatives Would really like to visit Hallstat again too

We did the ice caves at Werfen a few years ago. We drove, so no info on getting there by train. It was a fair hike (uphill) from the parking lot. Suggest you bring some warm, wind-proof clothing when you go, including hats and gloves. Ice caves temperatures are below 0 C / 32 F and very windy. They provided us with miners lamps, and mine kept getting blown out by the wind. Hohenwerfen (castle) was great and something we ended up enjoying that part of the trip immensely. They had a falconry display in period costume that was great. My short video is at: "Falconry in Period Costume - Hohenwerfen Austria" - Schloss Hohenwerfen Video by GrumpyDiver
