Bay of Islands in Winter?

by CelinaLee Online Now May 28, 2012 at 3:19 AM

I'll be in Auckland for a few days in early June and I am wondering if it is worth it to go up to the Bay of Islands for a few days? Is there much to do up that way other than beach-y stuff? Would it be worth seeing in the winter?

The Bay of Islands is the birthplace of New Zealand. There is considerable focus on the European settlement history of NZ, with several historic sites based around the coastal towns of Russell, Kerikeri and Waitangi but also inland places as well. The bay cruises continue to operate over winter-time including dolphin tours, and half and full day trips to Hole in the Rock and Cape Brett. Sailing and deep sea fishing adventures are yar round activities. Waitangi Treaty house and grounds are good value, and are an indoors/outdoors attraction. Pompallier house in Russell is not to be missed. There are glow-worm caves in Kawakawa, this town also has the Hundertwasser loos. Mud bathing pools in Ngawha, and waterfalls and bushwalks in Haruru and Kerikeri. Kerikeri has the stone store, the oldest building in NZ. Cape Reinga is another year round attraction, with day tours departing from Paihia, Kerikeri and Mangonui. The Bay of Islands and Far North also retain a number of important Maori pa-sites located in significant coastal settings. One of the best examples of Maori fortification is found at Ruapekapeka near Kawakawa where a fierce battle against the British took place. Trench warfare won out. The region is also known for its artisan foods and fresh produce. Lots to taste, sample and see in the sub-tropical climate of the north.

Hi I would definitely go up there if you have a chance. If you do, a boat trip out on the water is by far the best way to see the Bay of Islands. I personally recommend http://www.dolphincruises.co.nz/ You can either go out to the "hole in the rock" and also have the chance to see dolphins or the company also do the Original Cream Trip Cruise - this cruise follows the path of the original 1927 'Cream Trip' and will take you on a journey back in time as you cruise past the secluded islands of the Bay, delivering essential supplies and mail to island residents. Both are not to be missed trips.
