Coming to Atlanta in December

by kim2456 Online Now May 10, 2012 at 12:02 PM

Hi I am coming to Atlanta at Christmas time and really no nothing about Atlanta. As I don't drive I will have to use the Marta to go any distance. I would like to stay near the city as I am a walker. I am really looking to go somwhere where I can sit and write and do some sightseeing. Any suggestions? Thanks

I live in Decatur which is adjacent to Atlanta so can probably make some suggestions if you tell me what kind of sightseeing you are interested in. Many of the "attractions" in Atlanta are near downtown - the World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Aquarium, the CNN Center are all within a 5 minute walk of each other. The MLK Center and the Carter Center are both accessible by MARTA. If you like a small town feel in a big city, Decatur is a nice place with tons of really good restaurants and is 15 minutes by MARTA from downtown Atlanta. Stone Mountain is one of the sites that is not easily accessible by pubic transport. What are you interested in doing and seeing?

I am really not sure. I like all your suggestions on what to see. Would it be feasible to stay in decatur and then go into atlanta to see the sights. I am not really interested in night time activity. I like art museums, starbucks and peace and quiet. Stone Mtn sounds like fun Thanks kim

It would certainly be feasible to stay in Decatur and go into Atlanta on Marta. There is a newly renovated Marriott Courtyard just about 3 blocks from the Decatur Marta station and there are at least a couple of bed and breakfasts. There is a Starbucks a block from the Courtyard and two more local type coffee houses nearby that I like even better. And there are lots of great restaurants. I have favorites which I will share if you want. I am still not sure about how you would get to Stone Mountain. Atlanta has a really good art museum, The High Museum of Art. They have a nice permanent collection and lots of special exhibits. You can google them to see what is on in December. Their next big exhibit will be after you leave, but it will give you an idea of how good they do with them. It is The Girl With the Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis and includes about 35 paintings from the Hague. You can get to the museum on MARTA. Let me know if I can be of further help.

I spent about 3 months in Atlanta on business late last year and can also recommend Decatur. Had dinner there on 4 separate occasions in 3 restaurants. In Atlanta you can also easily get to Piedmont Park and you might also want to consider a visit to the old cemetary in town which is very pretty and does have some famous people buried there. I have a number of other restaurant and places to see in Atlanta on my Atlanta page.
