Will pre-election visit be a problem?

by nzbased Online Now May 19, 2012 at 7:46 PM

Hi, Our cruise ship docks at Piraeus on 15 June (2 days pre-election) and we had plans to make our own way into Athens and sightsee on our own. Does anyone envisage trouble on the street/transport system which should make us re-think our plans? Our alternative is to take a ship excursion (although expensive and none do exactly what we'd like to do!). Any thoughts folks! Thanks so much.

Is this the end of the trip or just a day stop? I suspect it is a day stop?

Strikes happens very frequently in Athens, not just at elections, but i think you should be able to find your way in to the city anyway. If there are big demonstrations then they are almost always centerd around Syntagma Square and down towards Omonia square which does not affect the Acropolis area or the Plaka. I was working quite a bit as a tour leader for danish groups last eyar when they had lot´s of strikes and demonstartions, but we always got to see everything without too much hassle even if the streets where filled with protestors. And if you are coming from Piraeus port then the easiest and chespest way to get to the center of Athens is with the metro that goes directly from the port to the center of the city.

Hi, most likely you will have no problem.15th of June is working day for Greece so all the transport system will be working as usual. In case there are political gatherings or demostrations (as the law here allows the last political speech to be held that day) the ll probably be on the center of Athens (Syntagma sq. or Omonoia) at late afternoon. The rest of the center will be free.So don't change your plans.

Well if there are demonstrations take is as local custom, it is after all the birthplace of democracy ;-) And sure Athens goes on even if there may be strikes the people of the city also need to get around.

My knowledgeable Athens friends say, no strikes or significant demonstrations are expected before the elections... do as you have planned.

Thanks everyone for all that reassuring advice. We have decided to play safe and take a cruise excursion to view the sights, but which also allows us 3hrs freetime in Athens, before taking us back to the ship on a bus. We were worried that a transport disruption would cause us to miss the boat! Getting excited now! Thanks again all.

You shouldn't have a problem moving from Piraeus to Athens, especially if you decide to use the Metro (starting from the other side of Piraeus port). In my opinion, proceed with your own schedule and do not book the ship's cruise. In fact the last weeks, things have been quite stable. I cannot guarantee that there won't be any strike, but I believe all unions will save this for after the elections.
