Train from Athens to Istanbul

by Minashka Online Now Nov 8, 2007 at 12:33 AM

Hi there :) Some friends and I will be traveling to Greece soon and I've got some questions, if you don't mind... 1) How far/close is Athens from Thessaloniki? Should we be better off taking the train or bus from Thessaloniki to Athens? How long does it take? Any idea how much it would cost? 2) Are there trains from Athens to Istanbul? How long does it take? Could you please give me a link to some website that would have all the timetable and price info? 3) Since we're all on kind of a low budget, could you please recommend a decent place (hotel, hostel, pansion, etc.) close to downtown (or in downtown) Athens for a reasonable price? Sorry for all the questions and I appreciate your answers :) Greetings from Baku, Minai

"Some friends and I will be traveling to Greece soon and I've got some questions," Hope, I got some answers. You may also ask at www.mza.ru or www.poezda.net All my answer are about trains. No bus/airplane info here, but we travel very extensively by trains. "1) How far/close is Athens from Thessaloniki? Should we be better off taking the train or bus from Thessaloniki to Athens? How long does it take? Any idea how much it would cost? " Itak, delo v sledujuschem. Po Balkanam est' tak nazyvaemyj "Uniformnyj Tarif". Eto chto-to vrode "mezhgosa". T.e. cena "izvne" znachitel'no (a imenno priblizitel'no v dva raza) VYSHE chem esli pokupat' vnutri. Est' i vnutrennie ceny - oni kak pravilo deshevle vseh, no k "uniformnomu tarifu" blizko. "Normal'nyj" tarif tut: www.jizdenka.cz (esli s cheshskim jazykom trudno - vyberi anglijskij). Nabiraj stancii (skazhem, Afiny = Athine) i Solun' (=Thessaloniki). Vyjdet 34.20 Evra. Jeto ta cena, kakuju zaplatish' v Prage ili Germanii ili gde ugodno. No v Grecii jeto budet gde-to okolo 18 Evro. Eto 511 kilometrov. Poezdov dostatochno mnogo. Raspisanie posmotri na www.db.de, ono tam dovol'no tochnoe. "2) Are there trains from Athens to Istanbul? How long does it take? Could you please give me a link to some website that would have all the timetable and price info?" Tol'ko Solun'-Stambul. Poezd edet noch'. Tam TOL'KO spal'nye vagony (SV). Cena 50 Evro, vkljuchaja SV. To est' bilet + plackarta = 50 Evro. Imeja vvidu, chto ekonomish' na gostinice - ne tak uzh ploho. V proshlom godu ehali sami. Vybiraj TURECKIJ sostav. Grecheskij HUZHE. Oni cherez den'. Cena odinakovaja. Linkov net. Bilety nado pokupat' na meste. Problem dazhe v sezon (letom) net nikakih. Vsjo ochen' trivial'no. Ehal s zhenoj i tremja det'mi - nikakih problem. Na tretij vopros otvetit' ne mogu. V Stambule OSTOROZHNO: u menja v tramvae vykrali kosheljok, pacan rabotal ochen' akkuratno... Greetings from Baku, Minai

Hello, I will answer some of your questions, 1) Thessaloniki is 520 Km from Athens and the I believe the best way to go is by train, although a bit more expensive. It would take you 7 hours to go on coach and about 4:15 hours to go on train (48,40€) or 5 Hrs on Train 35,30€ . Buses from Athens to Thessaloniki cost 34€, so I would rather take the train. 2) Yes there are trains from Athens to instabull but I would sugest you take a train from Istanbul from Thessalonica, which you will pass by anyway if you travel from Athens to Istanbul (http://www.ose.gr/echome.asp?lang=2) 3) I cant help you much with it check http://www.booking.com/ I hope all this helped you a bit.
