I am thinking about a 4 weeks trip with my family to Vietnam. I would like to fly to Kunming (25 years ago my husband worked there for some months and I spent 5 weeks there). Some days there and surrondings, then travel overland by bus to Vietnam. A few days in Sapa, then Hanoi and Halong Bay. Train to Hue, beach at Hoi An. Direct to HCM (fly/train?), via Mekong to Phnom Penh and further to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat. From there flight home to Switzerland. My husband doesn’t like big cities, so I think we would just pass HCM and Phnom Penh but spend some time in Kunming and Hanoi. Is this doable in 4 weeks with stays at each place for some nights? Thanks for your thoughts Jacqueline
First of all Phnom Penh is considerable smaller than Kunming and Hanoi. Guess you can' t really skip Kunming, but you should probaply limit your time in Hanoi if your husband does not like big cities. And i would say that it's doable. Be ware that the beach is not that great in Hoi An, but the town itself is very very nice. Also be ware that Sapa is quite time consuming, so if you need to cut out something in the end to make it doable then this is where you can save quite a bit of time.

Thanks cachaseiro. I think that we would really like to go to Sapa, we like mountains, landscapes, markets, my husband and 19 y.o. son are crazy mountain cyclists (I prefer it flat), and with the 12 y.o. we can do some nice hikes. Is there a better beach on our itinerary? But it is not really necessary to swim, is also possible at Halong Bay?

If you take an overnight cruise then you can easily swin in Halong Bay, both from the boat and most likely from a beach too as most boats make stops for that.
