Transit Visa at KUL airport

by swancity Online Now Jun 1, 2012 at 2:28 PM

Hi, I'm Canadian, my flight(probably Air canada or china airlines) from YVR(vancouver) arrive in KUL midnight, and my next flight is Airasia to Makassar (Ind) around 2 pm next day, so I have about 14 hrs at the airport,my Q is: 1. do I need visa?even if I don't plan to go out of airport. I'm thinking of using the transit hotel at the airport, I assume I have to collect my luggage and back to transit hotel again, is that such a hassle? since I don't know how big is the airport. 2. does anyone ever fly with china airline? i heard some of the plane didn't have personal TV (long flight). thx

First of all you won't need a visa. Secondly there is Tune Hotel next to the airport which you can book online. You will have to collect your luggage and check it in again, but possibly you may consider leaving the bulk of your luggage with the baggage storage facilities or use a locker. There are 2 terminals, the main international and the low cost carrier, i am sure you will be using the main one. There are plenty of places to eat at the airport. WWW.klia.com.my gives info about airport, luggage, hotel booking etc. Hope this assist you.

If you are flying Air Canada or China Airlines, I am sure your flight will land at KL Internatinal Airport. You are flying AAsia again after 14 hrs, Air Asia would certainlay depart from KLIA LCCT or low cost carrier terminal. They are 2 different terminals, although they are only 5 km if you look at google map, but it is definitely not a walking distance for you as the road connectted the 2 terminals are more than 15 km I guess. If you plan to have a good short sleep, the Tune Hotel is a good choice, or you may spend your time at 2 terminals. Suggest you arrive earlier at LCCT International check in need some time. Enjoy your stay at 2 terminals in Malaysia.

For 8 ringgits (which is about 2 Canadian dollars) you can take a bus from either airport to the main city centre of KL and then come back on the bus whenever you're ready to. I think they run 24/7 but check beforehand, just in case, For luggage, like another VTer suggested, you could check it into a hotel or into the lockers/baggage storage areas in the airport (baring in mind that if you're flying into the international airport and then out of the budget airport, LCCT, you'll need to go back to the international airport first and then to LCCT so it might be better to just check it into a hotel. 'Tis up to your though). You won't need a visa, you'll just get a stamp which is your visa. I'm afraid I don't know the TV situation with China Airlines

    1. The transit hotels are outside the terminal buildings. You will arrive at KUL (KLIA)'s Satellite Terminal from YVR and will take the train to the main terminal for immigration and baggage collection/customs check, after which you will exit the Arrivals Hall. The distance you'll walk would be equivalent to walking from YVR's domestic arrival to international departure. There are two transit hotels: the Pan Pacific at KLIA which you can walk across to or wait for their shuttle to pick you up. Or you can take a taxi to the LCCT (I don't know if the bus between the two airports operate after midnight) to check into Tune Hotel. The taxi will cost you about €10! Unless after midnight charges apply. Then it'll be fifty percent more! At that time of night and after such a long haul flight, I wouldn't venture into KL. The Skybus might cost you €2 but taxi touts will be waiting for you at KL Sentral to fleece you if the taxi coupon counter upstairs is closed. Even then they'll be touting you downstairs, where the buses arrive! Furthermore, you will have less than 14hrs in total, given the time you arrive at KL Sentral and the predeparture need to be at the LCCT at least two hrs earlier. FYI AirAsia can close its check in counter earlier than you expect! I know of a couple who arrived in time, in their opinion, and were refused boarding to Yangon and had to fly the next day! So, it's best not to be penny wise but pound foolish! ;)
